NC State football offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck sees a night-and-day difference between where his unit stands in 2020, which was Beck’s first year in Raleigh, and now. A major reason for that is that fifth-year redshirt junior quarterback Devin Leary is also night-and-day different.

“It’s hard to even put into words, the difference,” Beck noted about Leary. “He was shy, still learning to be a quarterback. Right now, this is his team. He does a great job in everything that he does — the way he handles himself, the way he plays, the way he studies the game.”

Beck added that the growth in Leary is a tribute to the player himself.

“He has worked really hard doing it, and I’m really proud of him,” Beck added.

The presence of Leary, the preseason ACC Player of the Year, has likely made this year’s install during training camp a smooth process.

“I’m pleased where we’re at offensively,” Beck declared. “I think we have a good mix of veteran players that have played a lot of games, and a good mix of young, rising talented players that are hungry and that fit into our culture.

“I really like where we’re at, but we still have work to do.”

Now Beck turns his attention to East Carolina, the season-opening opponent. Beck personally has not been to Greenville on a coaching assignment.

“From what I’ve heard, it’s a great environment to play in,” Beck noted. “You have to give a lot of credit to their fans.

“They’re a good football team, and they play really hard, especially at home. We’re looking forward to the challenge of going there. I think Devin’s the right guy to lead us there.”

The question is if something happens and NC State has to turn to the backup quarterback Saturday, Beck sees two potential options in Charleston Southern grad transfer Jack Chambers and true freshman MJ Morris.

Beck joked that the comparison was “like having a 21-year old and a newborn.”

“I give a lot of credit to Jack and MJ, though,” Beck added. “They’re both very intelligent young men. They’ve picked up a lot, more than I thought they would.

“You can see there are days where their brains are oatmeal. You’re teaching to the highest level getting Devin prepared, and sometimes it’s just overwhelming for those guys, and it shows. I try to streamline it for them to make it not so much so they can go out and have some success. I’m really proud of where those guys are.”

Elsewhere on the offense, Beck noted that redshirt sophomore left tackle Anthony Belton’s improvement is “very impressive.” Beck also complimented two young receivers in third-year redshirt freshman Jalen Coit and redshirt freshman Julian Gray.

“Our running backs are very consistent,” Tim Beck added. “I have a lot of confidence in all those guys.

“You see that, per se, as opposed to just one giant jump from somebody that’s like, ‘Wow, this guy just came out of nowhere.’ You see a lot of guys that have made an improvement this offseason.”
