Tim Beck continues to be impressed by MJ Morris
NC State football offensive coordinator Tim Beck knows that the chatter will grow to increase the playbook for his freshman signal-caller MJ Morris. Beck’s cautionary tale preaches patience.
“He is a freshman, let’s not forget that,” Beck added.
In leading the offense for much of the past two games, including his first career start in a 30-21 win over previously ranked Wake Forest, Morris has completed 38 of 57 passes for 475 yards and 6 touchdowns without an interception.
Beck noted, “Part of the success is simplicity.”
“My experience of dealing with freshmen, at some point in their freshmen season whether it’s fall camp or early in the season or even late in the season, their brain turns to mush like oatmeal, and they hit a wall,” Beck explained. “You just have to be careful not to over it.”
That said, Morris has undoubtedly impressed Beck. First with his mental preparations while running third string and then with his acceptance of becoming a more vocal leader as Morris rose up the depth chart.
“He knew Devin Leary was our quarterback, and that he came here to learn from him,” Beck noted. “… MJ was just a sponge, soaking it up and sitting in the back, and now it’s his time.
“When I talked to him I said, ‘This has to be your team now. You have to take over, and you have to become more vocal. You have to be that guy.’ And he has.”
While Morris is the future for NC State football, the soon-to-be past will be the focal point this Saturday when Boston College visits Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., and the game will be telecast on ACC Network.

About 30 players will be honored on Senior Day since Saturday will be the last home game of the 2022 season. That includes several underclassmen still deciding on the futures, with Leary, a fifth-year redshirt junior, in that group. Leary has previously stated he has not made any decisions about his future.
Beck noted about Senior Day that, “It’s always an emotional game.”
“I just want nothing but the best for them,” Tim Beck said of the players walking on Senior Day. “My goal right now is to give the best plan that we can to coach our guys up.
“They’ve played a lot of football, and they’ve bled and really developed this culture in this program and followed the direction of Coach [Dave Doeren]. They’ve established this program and where it is.
“It’s going to be weird to know that one day you’re going to come to the building and not see some of those guys.”
