Tony Gibson is reportedly signing a contract extension
According to a report from FootballScoop.com, NC State football defensive coordinator Tony Gibson will be sticking around Raleigh for at least a few more years. Gibson is signing a three-year contract extension that will pay him about $1.3 million annually, per FootballScoop.com.
Gibson has impressed with his work in three seasons as the defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at NC State.
In 2019, Gibson arrived as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach while working with NC State defensive coordinator Dave Huxtable. That season, the Wolfpack finished 72nd in yards per game allowed. After compiling a 4-8 record, Doeren relieved Huxtable, who had been coordinating all of Doeren’s defenses at NC State since 2013, and promoted Gibson as part of an overhaul of the coaching staff.
Over the final five games of the 2020 season, only one team surpassed 400 yards of offense on Gibson’s defense, and high-powered Liberty, led by NFL quarterback Malik Willis, accounted for just 279 yards while the Wolfpack handed the Flames their lone loss of the season.
The NC State defense carried that momentum into 2021 and was 19th nationally in total yards allowed. Gibson’s unit once again finished top 20 this season, coming in 20th at 327.0 yards per contest surrendered, slightly better than the 330.9 given up the year before.
Gibson has been a nominee for the Broyles Award, given to college football’s top assistant coach, for the past two seasons.
Gibson’s successes had led to speculation that he would be a popular target for open defensive coordinator vacancies. His name was also bandied as a potential candidate should the West Virginia position open up, but the Mountaineers decided to keep head coach Neal Brown for another season.

Prior to coming to NC State, Gibson was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at West Virginia from 2014-18. He coached safeties for the Mountaineers in 2013.
The year before, Gibson was the assistant head coach at Arizona and also coached safeties. While there, he worked with Robert Anae, who was the Wildcats’ offensive line coach. Anae was hired earlier in the month to be the new NC State offensive coordinator, replacing Tim Beck, who signed on to be the new head coach at Coastal Carolina.
Gibson’s return keeps the continuity of the defensive coaching staff. After the 2019 season, Gibson led an overhaul of the staff, hiring two assistants he formerly worked with at West Virginia in safeties coach Joe DeForest and corners coach Brian Mitchell.
Defensive line coach Charley Wiles, who previously worked with Mitchell at West Virginia, was also hired, and NC State alum Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay rounded out the new-look defensive coaching staff as nickels coach.
Tony Gibson’s team of defensive coaches has remained intact over the past three seasons.
