The uniform craze in college football can probably be attributed to Oregon’s colorful combinations that were mixed and matched starting around the 1996 season. Now every team, No. 13-ranked NC State football included, tries to vary the combinations of the school colors on a seemingly weekly basis.

On Thursday, NC State unveiled their uniform combination for Saturday’s 2022 home opener against Charleston Southern at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The Wolfpack is heavily favored in the 12:30 kickoff, and the game will be televised on RSN affiliates or online on ESPN3 for out-of-market viewers.

NC State is going with traditional colors for the home debut.

For this game, NC State football is wearing white helmets, red jerseys and white pants, which the Pack official twitter account labeled as “classic.”

NC State fans don’t have to go back long to remember the last time that the Wolfpack wore that particular color combination. The 2021 regular season finale, which also proved to be the last game of the year after UCLA canceled on NC State in the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, against rival North Carolina saw the Pack wear the same uniforms.

Everyone on both sides of that rivalry will remember how NC State rallied from down 30-21 thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Devin Leary to receiver Emeka Emezie in the final 1:35 of the contest, with an onside kick recovery in between the 2 scores being a crucial development for the rally.

In the game prior to UNC, when NC State rolled to a 41-17 home win at Carter-Finley Stadium over Syracuse, NC State also donned the white helmets, red jerseys and white pants.

In fact, Saturday against Charleston Southern will actually mark the fourth consecutive home contest in which NC State has gone with this combination. On Oct. 30, 2021, the Pack reached bowl eligibility with a 28-13 victory over Louisville.

Last year was the first time since 1986 that NC State went undefeated at home. In addition to the already noted contests, the Pack wore the uniform combos that is being used Saturday in the thrilling double overtime victory over Clemson plus an easy triumph over Furman, who like Charleston Southern is from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

The only two Carter-Finley Stadium games in 2021 during which NC State went with a different look was the season opening rout of South Florida where the Pack used an alternate uniform and the 34-27 win over Louisiana Tech during which NC State used the all black unis.

Last week at East Carolina, NC State went with white helmets and jerseys and red pants.
