NC State 'Pack of Champs' adds another in Katelyn Tuohy
On Saturday, NC State sophomore Katelyn Tuohy capped a strong year for national champions in Wolfpack athletics. And appropriately the final title belonged to a female. In 2021-22, the women carried the torch for NC State.
Tuohy, perhaps the most decorated prep runner in history, arrived at NC State with much fanfare in the distance running community. After overcoming an injury, Tuohy has returned to dominant form. At the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore., Tuohy won the national title in the 5K in a time of 15:18.39, the third fastest time in meet history.
Last year, NC State’s Elly Henes won the national title in the same race.
For Tuohy, Saturday was the second time she has participated in a national-title winning moment for NC State.
She was a member of the NC State women’s cross country that entered the NCAA Championship race as the favorite and ranked No. 1 in the country. The Wolfpack had won its sixth straight ACC championship in October and easily captured the NCAA regional leading up to the championship meet.
The Wolfpack led the team standings at every kilometer during its dominating performance, winning the NCAA Championship on Nov. 20, 2021 in Tallahassee. The team title was the first in NC State athletics since the famous men’s basketball squad in 1983.
Three other women won national titles in the spring of 2022. In swimming, junior Katharine Berkoff set an American record against a loaded field in the 100-yard backstroke to successfully defend her title from a year ago. She is the first NC State female swimmer to win back-to-back individual championships.
Berkoff would later qualify for the FINA World Championships currently underway in Budapest, Hungary with another American record, this time in the 50-meter backstroke.

In women’s tennis, the duo of super senior Jaeda Daniel and senior Nell Miller teamed up to win the NCAA Championship in doubles. The pair was the top seed entering the event and successfully captured the first national title in the sport for NC State.
NC State women’s tennis, which reached the Final Four a year ago, nearly made a return trip before losing a 4-3 match to Duke in the Elite Eight.
Leading the way among the Pack men was junior backstroke swimmer Kacper Stokowski, who may have also taken home the prize for best post-title celebration. Stokowski teamed with Berkoff to give Wolfpack swimming a sweep of the 100-yard backstroke races.
After winning the race, Stokowski immediately climbed out of the pool in a celebration that went viral in the college swimming community.
