NC State LB Cannon Lewis enters transfer portal
NC State freshman linebacker Cannon Lewis entered the transfer portal Tuesday evening, TheWolfpacker.com and On3 Sports have learned.
The former three-star recruit appeared in four games with the Wolfpack as he maintained his redshirt status this past fall. He appeared in 50 special teams snaps with nine plays on defense through his contests at NC State.
Lewis, who logged 181 total tackles as a senior at Huntington (W.Va.) Cabell Midland, was listed on the Pack’s two-deep at MIKE linebacker by the end of the season ahead of the team’s Military Bowl bout with East Carolina on Dec. 28.
The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker was viewed as a depth player with the chance of pushing for more playing time next season. He is the first of the Class of 2024 recruiting crop to enter the transfer portal from NC State.

While Lewis is the first from this past year’s freshman class to enter the portal, he is NC State’s third linebacker to leave. The first-year defender joins redshirt junior Jayland Parker (who committed to Marshall) and junior Wyatt Wright from the position group to depart Raleigh.
Lewis, a West Virginia native, raved about defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Tony Gibson after he committed in 2022. Gibson is now the head coach at Marshall.
“Coach Gibson is nothing short of a defensive genius,” Lewis previously told TheWolfpacker.com. “I would have a very hard time passing up the opportunity to be coached by coach Gibson and all the surrounding staff. The program that Dave Doeren has built, with its model consistency and ability to retain coaches, is just awesome. It made it really easy to pull the trigger and very difficult to pass up.”
Lewis picked NC State over the likes of Eastern Kentucky, Marshall and Toledo out of high school.
