NC State fell to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the ACC after a 13-10 loss to Louisville headlined by an elite defensive effort complemented by very little production from the offense. Following the program’s second defeat of the year, it fell one spot in On3’s weekly conference power rankings to No. 9.

“The Wolfpack had a strong showing defensively against an explosive Louisville offense, but Brennan Armstrong and the rest of the NC State offense continued to struggle. Because of that, NC State is making a change at quarterback and going with MJ Morris.

“The sophomore is set to start for the Wolfpack on Saturday against Marshall. Morris has yet to play in a game this season, but he did account for eight touchdowns, with only one interception, in 2022.”

NC State slots in-between No. 8 Wake Forest and No. 10 Virginia Tech. The program is still scheduled to play 5 teams in the power rankings’ top 8.

Moving forward, the Wolfpack enters a new phase of this season with MJ Morris at starting quarterback. His first test as a sophomore will be against undefeated Sun Belt foe Marshall. Morris threw for 648 yards as a true freshman, leading NC State to a comeback win over Virginia Tech, an impressive victory over Wake Forest and a senior day loss to Boston College.

NC State quote of the day

This quote is from senior defensive lineman Savion Jackson, who shared his thoughts on Morris.

“He’s not a young freshman anymore, a guy that hasn’t played football,” Jackson said. “So, when he steps on the field, he knows what he’s doing. He’s not scared. He’s past all the shyness. I feel like he’s going to step in and do what he’s capable of.”
