NC State Newsstand: Diana Shnaider clinches spot in Olympic gold medal match
NC State already has a pair of Olympic medals from the swimming pool in Paris. Now, it is guaranteed one more on the tennis court.
Former Wolfpack standout Diana Shnaider clinched a spot in the women’s doubles gold medal match with her playing partner, Mira Andreeva, on Friday. The duo knocked off Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 6-2 to advance to Sunday’s final match.
The gold medal match will be played Sunday following the bronze medal match, which is set to begin at 6 a.m. ET. Shandier and Andreeva will square off with Italy’s Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini for Olympic glory.
Shnaider has the opportunity to become the first former college tennis player to win an Olympic gold in women’s doubles since Gigi Fernandez, a former Clemson star, did it in 1992.
Shnaider and Andreeva are playing as individual neutral athletes in the summer games.
A former ACC Freshman of the Year, Shnaider has impressed as a professional since her lone season with the Wolfpack. She helped NC State win its first-ever ACC title, which culminated in a first-ever appearance in the National Championship match in 2023.

The Wolfpack hosted four-star power forward Latrell Allmond on campus this week. Here’s what he is looking for in a program.
“I’m looking for a school that’s going to allow me to be me and develop me as a player and a good person off the court too,” Allmond said. “Seeing the floor early my freshman year, that’s one of my big things. And having a coach that’s going to be honest with me about what I’m here for and what he’s expecting of me.”
