After becoming the first former NC State women’s tennis player to qualify for the Olympic games, Diana Shnaider earned a first-round win before being bounced in her second march.

Shnaider, who was competing as an individual neutral athlete in the games, made quick work of Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round Sunday, 6-2, 7-5.

That set up a date with China’s Wang Wiyu in the second round Monday, but it did not go as well for Shnaider. The tournament’s 15-seed dropped her second match in a 3-6, 1-6 decision to end her singles time in Paris.

Shnaider, however, is still set to play in doubles with Mirra Andreeva against Australia’s Olivia Gadecki and Ajla Tomljanovic at the Olympics later this week..

A former ACC Freshman of the Year, Shnaider has impressed as a professional since her lone season with the Wolfpack. She helped NC State win its first-ever ACC title, which culminated in a first-ever appearance in the National Championship match in 2023.

Quote of the day

NC State football has position battles on its special teams unit this fall. Special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel has not ruled any player out of the races yet.

“They understand that, when your number is called, you’ve got to be at your best,” Goebbel said. “There are not any redos on special teams. Redos and my bad’s don’t work, and you don’t get another down.”
