NC State Newsstand: Former Pack standout Kayla Jones promoted to director of player personnel

NC State coach Wes Moore believed he wouldn’t be able to keep former Wolfpack standout Kayla Jones on his staff once her graduate assistantship ended. But, as it turns out, he was wrong.
Moore and the Wolfpack promoted Jones, one of the key pieces of NC State’s three straight ACC Tournament titles as a player, to the program’s director of player personnel on Wednesday.
“We are thrilled to keep Kayla Jones here at NC State,” Moore said. “After helping to lead us to three consecutive ACC Championships and an Elite Eight appearance as a player, she is a perfect fit as a mentor to our current student-athletes. Kayla’s experience and outstanding performance on the court and in the classroom has paid dividends the last two years in her role as a graduate assistant. We’re excited to have her continue that leadership in a full-time position as our Director of Player Personnel.”
Jones, who served as a graduate assistant in each of the last two seasons with the post players, will serve as a mentor for NC State’s roster moving forward. She will also serve as a point of contact for the program within the athletic department, in addition to participating in community events.
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to stay home and give back to a program that has given so much to me,” Jones said in a statement. “I want to express my gratitude to Coach Moore and the staff for trusting me in taking on this bigger role. I’m excited to work with this team and watch the players grow and develop on and off the court throughout their careers at NC State and beyond.”
The former five-year standout shot 47.6 percent from the field during her Wolfpack career. She currently is 12th in 3-point percentage (35.5 percent) and 15th in rebounds (707) in her NC State tenure.

After propelling the Pack to a trio of ACC Tournament titles as a player, Jones was the 22nd overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. She played overseas in Mexico and Hungary before beginning her coaching career on Moore’s staff.
Now, she’s locked in to stay in Raleigh for the foreseeable future.

NC State freshman third baseman Ryder Woodson emerged as a piece of the future last weekend at the Auburn Regional. That’s exactly what his high school coach, Charlie Maurer, expected to see.
“The best part about coaching Ryder is he always wanted to be challenged,” Maurer said. “He wanted you to coach him harder. And the higher the competition, the higher the stakes, the better he was.”
