NC State women’s distance running superstar Katelyn Tuohy received another major accolade Thursday. The ACC named her the conference’s female athlete of the year with the Mary Garber Award.

Tuohy was an All-American in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field this yearand broke multiple national collegiate records. During the indoor season, her 4:24.26 mile time shattered the NCAA record. The elite distance runner followed that up with another collegiate record with a 8:51.92 3000 meter race.

“I am honored to be named the ACC Female Athlete of the Year,” Tuohy said in a press release. “There are so many incredible female athletes in the ACC and I’m truly honored for this recognition. I have to thank my coaches and teammates for their constant support and pushing me to be the best I can be.”

In addition to winning the 2022 individual women’s cross country championship in 2022, she helped the Wolfpack win the team title as well. Tuohy followed that up with two more national titles during the indoor track season.

She is the first NC State athlete to win the ACC athlete of the year award since former men’s golf star Matt Hill did so in 2009. Julie Shea, a two-time winner of the award while running track and field in 1980 and 1981, is the only other Wolfpack women’s athlete to receive the honor.
