NC State Newsstand: Madison Hayes wins national player of the week award
Madison Hayes is in the middle of a career-best season, recording new highs in scoring, rebounding and three-point shooting with NC State women’s basketball. She received recognition from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association this week as one of its five national players of the week.
This is Hayes’ first time receiving the award, and she took home the honor after scoring 15 or more points against both Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. The senior guard played a key role in both Wolfpack wins.
Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, South Carolina center Kamilla Cardosa, Princeton guard Kaitlyn Chen and UConn forward Aaliyah Edwards each made the national players of the week list alongside Hayes.
“Hayes, a 6-0 senior guard from Chattanooga receiving her first-ever USBWA honor, had 16 points and five rebounds in the win at Notre Dame, and then Sunday in the overtime win against Georgia Tech, scored 15 points with 11 rebounds, including the game winner with 1:59 left in the extra period, leading to an 86-85 triumph,” the USBWA wrote in a press release.
NC State stands 23-3 and 11-3 in the ACC heading into the program’s final few regular season games. Hayes, one of two current players who were also on the roster for the 2022 Elite 8 run, is playing a huge part in the Wolfpack’s success this season.

NC State quote of the day
This quote is from NC State graduate center Zeke Correll, discussing why he chose to transfer and join the Wolfpack.
“I wanted to go somewhere where I felt like I could develop even more as a player, and prepare for the NFL, and help this program and be a leader for these guys and just be a part of this team and do something special,” Correll said in January. “I think we have what it takes.”
