NC State’s Sean Brown has played one drive at linebacker in his career in Raleigh. He moved to the position from safety this offseason, and Brown has already generated national buzz around his play in the middle of the Wolfpack defense.

The Charlotte, N.C., native was named to the 2024 Butkus Award Preseason Watch List, which honors the top linebacker in college football, on Tuesday. Former NC State linebacker Payton Wilson won the award a year ago, becoming the first Pack player to earn the trophy.

Brown has appeared in 30 games with 85 total tackles, five for a loss and two sacks in his NC State career. He has also added two interceptions and seven pass breakups as a standout defensive back for the Pack.

The Butkus Award is picked by a 51-person selection committee, made up of a collection of coaches, scouts and journalists. There is a winner at each level of football — high school, college and the NFL.

Quote of the day

NC State’s wide receivers have been impressive in fall camp. Wolfpack wideouts coach Joker Phillips thinks its the best room he’s had in his career in terms of talent.

“There are a lot of draft picks in there, talent wise,” Phillips said Tuesday. “This is as talented [of a group] as I’ve ever had. The most talented group that I’ve been around from top to bottom. I’ve been around talented guys like this, but not this deep. It’s fun to be a part of, it’s fun to watch.”
