One year after NC State football was a popular pick or the ACC championship game, the Wolfpack is once again receiving some preseason hype as a conference contender. The time, ACC Network analyst Roddy Jones picked the Pack as one of three sleepers to finish at the top of the standings.

Clemson and Florida State are the favorites to win the conference this season. If one or both of those teams are not playing in the title game in December, Jones said three programs are contenders to fill those spots— UNC, Pittsburgh and NC State.

He joined the Andy Staples On3 podcast to break down why those schools could make a run at the ACC championship. For NC State, it boils down to what the offense looks like paired with what projects to be another dominant defense.

“The third one is probably the wildcard,” Jones said. “If NC State is what I think they can be on offense, then they may jump to the top of this list because, defensively, I am convinced that they are going to be fantastic. I don’t want to say they are going to be better than a year ago, but they’ll be more athletic than they were a year ago.

“My biggest question offensively is where are the offensive playmakers at the skill positions because Brennan Armstrong transfers over from Virginia, reunites with Robert Anae who was his offensive coordinator at Virginia two years ago, when he threw for 4,500 yards in 10.5 games basically. Anae spent a year at Syracuse, now comes down to NC State and, I think, if they find the playmakers at the skill positions, they could be really good on offense and probably leapfrog the two I just mentioned.”
