In just eight days, NC State’s experienced defense will run out onto the field against East Carolina. That season-opening matchup will be the first opportunity for the Wolfpack to address the sky-high expectations surrounding the program.

Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson discussed the hype around the team and more Thursday. Here’s an excerpt from The Wolfpacker’s story ‘Tony Gibson is ready to see his standout NC State defense in action.’

Will the NC State football defense prove to be for real in 2022? The answer to that begins Saturday, Sept. 3 at East Carolina.

The Pack was No. 2 in the ACC last season in points per game allowed (19.7) and third in total yards a contest (331.6), rushing yards surrendered (124.0) and passing yards given up (207.6). NC State was the only defense in the conference to be able to claim a spot in the top three of all those statistical categories.

Seventeen defenders who started multiple games in 2021 are back this fall. Two more who made one start have also returned.

Hence why the expectations are large for the NC State defense. That’s fine with third-year defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Tony Gibson.

“We’re not running from it, we’re running to it,” Gibson noted.

The internal ambitions are also high for Gibson’s unit.

“We’re here for a reason,” Gibson said. “I want to be the best defense in the country. That’s my goal every year.

“They can bring all the hype they can give us, but we’ve got to go out and execute. I want that pressure. I want us to be the best. In order to do that, we have to practice that way and play that way.”

Quote of the day

This quote is from Wolfpack defensive back Tyler Baker-Williams discussing why he returned for a fifth season with the program.

“[I have] been through a lot with those guys,” Baker-Williams said. “The ups and downs. They’ve been there for me through the deepest moments, the saddest moments, so I appreciate those guys. I’ll do anything for them. That’s my whole reason for coming back.”
