NC State Newsstand: Wolfpack football continues post-spring rankings surge
After a successful spring practice slate and multiple transfer portal acquisitions, NC State football continues to appear on the national landscape.
The Wolfpack, which boasted the No. _ transfer portal recruiting class in the On3 Industry Ranking, checked into a pair of post-spring top 25 rankings lists this week.
The Athletic’s Stuart Mandel slotted the Wolfpack at No. 21, up two spots from his previous iteration of the rankings, while Sporting News’ Bill Bender put NC State at No. 24.
“Dave Doeren has the makings of a special offense, led by standout Coastal Carolina transfer quarterback Grayson McCall, All-ACC receiver KC Concepcion and transfer playmakers like running back Jordan Waters (Duke), receiver Wesley Grimes (Wake Forest) and receiver Noah Rogers (Ohio State),” Mandel wrote. “Former Notre Dame center Zeke Correll fills the only vacant starting job up front. The defense could take a step back without standouts Payton Wilson and Shyheim Battle.”
While Mandel focused primarily on the Wolfpack’s explosive offense, Bender took a wholistic approach.

“We had Georgia Tech here in the Way-Too-Early versions, but the Yellow Jackets lost 21 players in the transfer portal. Dave Doeren has maintained consistency with the Wolfpack, who added Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall for this season,” Bender wrote. “He completed 16 of 20 passes for 205 yards and a TD in the spring game – and that efficiency will be a difference maker. Davin Vann – who had 5.5 sacks last season – could emerge as one of the best interior defensive lineman in the country. NC State has a front-loaded schedule with a matchup against Tennessee in Charlotte on Sept. 7 and a trip to Clemson on Sept. 21. Will Doeren deliver his first 10-win season with the Wolfpack?”
NC State will open fall camp in August before hosting Western Carolina on Aug. 29 to begin the 2024 campaign in Raleigh.

Quote of the day
NC State baseball is at No. 7 Georgia for the Athens Super Regional this weekend. Coach Elliott Avent is not changing up his pitching rotation with the season on the line in a best two-of-three series.
“We don’t change much this time of the year,” Avent said. “You could say this matchup or that matchup. We’re here because of what those guys did and we’re not going to change that.”
