NC State Newsstand: Wolfpack golfer Nick Matthews logs top-15 finish at NCAA Championship
A third round 68 helped NC State redshirt junior Nick Matthews post a top-20 finish at the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship in Carlsbad, Calif., over the weekend.
Matthews, who qualified as an individual after he posted a -12 performance at the NCAA Regional, finished one-over par in the tournament, tied for 15th. He was the second-highest player that was there without their full team in the event.
The Mebane, N.C., native rose 35 spots from Saturday to Sunday after he rebounded from a five-over performance to a four-under day. Matthews logged six birdies in his final round, including four on the front nine at the Omni La Costa North Course.
That round punched his ticket to the final day of the stroke play portion of the championship, where Matthews was able to log an eagle with two birdies and three bogeys on his final round. He finished his NCAA Championship experience with a birdie on his final hole, the 426-yard par four ninth.
In all, Matthews made 12 birdies during the four rounds in his NCAA Championship debut. He was not far off the leaders with just 10 players under par and Georgia Tech’s Hirosh Tai was the winner at three-under par.

NC State Quote of the day
NC State baseball is the No. 10 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent was proud of his group earning that recognition.
“It says a lot,” Avent said. “It’s a grind now. Any time you get to this place, it is a grind. We’ve had guys that played injured all year and never said a word and then we’ve had some devastating injuries. … They happened late in the year, and it can sometimes derail you, but it didn’t for this club. That says everything about this ball club, I can’t tell you how proud we are of them.”
