NC State Newsstand: Wolfpack nearing top of ACC power rankings
NC State is on a four-game winning streak, and the Wolfpack is continuing to build more momentum in On3’s weekly ACC Power Rankings. Thanks to its recent victory over Virginia Tech, the program climbed one more spot this week up to No. 3.
The Pack rose past UNC after the No. 5 Tar Heels dropped two spots this week due to its loss to No. 4 Clemson. Florida State and Louisville are the only programs ranked above NC State.
“NC State appeared headed in the wrong direction at the midpoint of the season,” On3 wrote. “However, after getting off to a 4-3 start, the Wolfpack have won four straight and are now 8-3, with one regular season game remaining.
“Head coach Dave Doeren challenged his team after a 24-3 loss to Duke in mid-October. Since then, NC State has wins over Clemson, Miami, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. Quarterback Brennan Armstrong played really well this past weekend against Virginia Tech and appears to have regained his confidence after being benched earlier this season.”
A bye week following the Pack’s 24-3 loss to Duke earlier this fall turned the Pack’s season around. NC State defended its home field with impressive wins over Clemson and Miami in consecutive weeks. The program was a home underdog for both of those contests.
NC State followed that up with a two-game road trip, snapping its losing streak in Winston-Salem and then winning in Blacksburg, Va. for the first time in 2004. The Wolfpack stands 8-3 on the year with a rivalry matchup against UNC at Carter-Finley Stadium looming.
