The Wolfpacker’s Wednesday morning newsstand

Despite the loss to Boston College last weekend, the College Football Playoff committee remained impressed with NC State’s season so far and kept the program in the third edition of its top-25. The Wolfpack checked in at No. 24— an eight-spot drop from last week.

This is NC State’s highest standing out of the three poll after falling out of the Associated Press ranking entirely and slotting in at No. 25 with the USA Today Coaches Poll. Oregon State sits at No. 23, while Cincinnati is at No. 25.

A total of four ACC programs are ranked with Clemson at No. 9, North Carolina at No. 13 and Florida State at No. 19.

Both senior wing Jakia Brown-Turner and junior guard Diamond Johnson were named to the Wooden Award watch list— an award given to the best player in college basketball.

Sophomore guard Terquavion Smith was also recognized on the watch list.

Three-star defensive lineman and NC State commit Isaiah Shirley won his high school conference player of the year award this week.

Quote of the day

This quote is from defensive coordinator Tony Gibson discussing the impact Louisville star quarterback Malik Cunningham has on the game plan.

“Obviously the quarterback run game is crucial for us [if Cunningham plays],” Gibson confirmed. “We have to be able to stop that. If not, then obviously all the focus goes to the tailbacks if Malik’s not playing.

“We’ll just kind of see what they throw out there and we’ll be prepared and ready to roll.”
