Two former NC State starts have new professional homes following a pair of deals at this year’s NFL trade deadline. The Miami Dolphins put together a deal to acquire superstar edge rusher Bradley Chubb from the Denver Broncos, and the Colts traded Nyheim Hines to the Buffalo Bills.

Both trades were a part of an unprecedented deadline day that, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter set a new record for the most deals with 10.

Bradley Chubb lands with a contender

Miami continued to assert itself as a Super Bowl hopeful with Chubb’s addition, sending multiple picks and recently-signed running back Chase Edmonds back to Denver in the deal.

“The #Dolphins are sending a 2023 first-round pick (originally San Francisco’s), a 2024 fourth-round pick and RB Chase Edmonds to the #Broncos for Bradley Chubb and a 2025 fifth-round pick, per source,” the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero wrote in a tweet. “Denver replenishing its pick stockpile after the Russell Wilson deal.”

After the initial news broke, the Dolphins quickly made the trade official.

So far this season, Chubb has 5.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 26 total tackles this season while blitzing off the edge for the 3-5 Broncos. He started his career in the NFL with a fantastic rookie season that included a career-high 12 sacks. The now-Dolphins star has battled injuries since then but is still one of the most productive pass rushers in the league.

During his time at NC State, Chubb was one of the best players to ever take the field at Carter-Finley Stadium. He arrived in Raleigh before the 2014 season and spent the next 4 seasons dominating, winning the Bronko Nagurski Award, a honor for the nation’s top defensive player, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and a spot on the All-American team in 2017.

He finished that season with 23 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and 72 total tackles. The Broncos selected him with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft the following spring.

Nyheim Hines joins one of the NFL’s top offenses

Hines, who spend the past couple of years sharing a backfield with Jonathan Taylor, will now have a chance to carve out a role in a crowded running back room in Buffalo.

“The #Bills are trading RB Zack Moss and a sixth-round pick that can go to a fifth-rounder to the #Colts RB Nyheim Hines, sources tell me and @mikegarafolo,” Pelissero tweeted.

So far this season, Hines has 18 carries for 36 yards and a touchdown in limited action. The running back was in his fifth season with the Colts and has 1,205 career rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns. He arrived at NC State one year after Chubb and established himself as a true all-purpose back during his three season with the Wolfpack.

Hines finished his career with 1,400 rushing yards and 933 receiving yards, making a difference on the ground and through the air with NC State, while also taking 2 kickoffs and 1 punt back for touchdowns. The Colts drafted him in the fourth round in 2018.
