NC State wrestling is going for a five-peat ACC championship while hosting the annual league title meet at historic Reynolds Coliseum. The quarterfinals begin 11 a.m., and TheWolfpacker.com’s Brian Reinhardt will be in attendance covering with live updates on this blog and the message board.

Notes From NC State Wrestling ACC Title

2023 ACC Champions – Team

  • School-record fifth straight ACC Championship. First school to win five straight since 1973 (Maryland).
  • First school to score over 100 team points (101.5) since the Pack had 103.5 in 2007.
  • Third straight year the Pack has won the ACC title by over 20 points.
  • 4 ACC Champions, 5 ACC Runner-up, all 10 made the ACC semifinals, 9 podium finishes, 9 earned an NCAA automatic bid.
  • Pack went 19-7 on the day, every wrestler was .500 or better.

2023 ACC Champions – Individual

  • Trent Hidlay (184) – third straight ACC title
  • Owen Trephan (285) – Pack’s 19th ACC heavyweight title, most among any weight class at any school
  • Jarrett Trombley (125) – The Pack’s second straight at 125 pounds, and third in the last four years
  • Kai Orine (133) – NC State’s first-ever 133 pound ACC champion, the last weight class without a title

NC State Goes 4-4 In Title Bouts After Loss At 149

149 pounds:

No. 2 Jackson Arrington (NC State) vs. No. 1 Caleb Henson (VT)

1st – Henson with the takedown with 1:06 left in the period. Arrington escape after 0:36 of RT. 1-2 -0:36 of RT

2nd – Henson chooses down and escapes after 31 seconds. 1-3 -0:05 RT

3rd – Arrington chooses down, but Henson rides out most of the period for the 4-2 win in the final bout for the Pack.

Ryan Jack Falls Short At 141 Pounds

141 pounds:

No. 2 Ryan Jack (NC State) vs. No. 1 Cole Matthews (Pitt)

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Jack chooses down, Matthews racks up 1:24 of RT before Jack escape. 1-0 -1:24 of RT.

3rd – Matthews chooses down and escapes while keeping RT above 1 minute (1:22). Jack falls to Matthews 2-1.

History At 133 Pounds For NC State Wrestling

133 pounds:

No. 3 Kai Orine (NC State) vs. Micky Phillippi (Pitt)

1st – Orine captures Phillippi’s leg, keeps it up for a long time, but can’t secure the takedown. Scoreless first.

2nd – Phillippi defers, Orine chooses down. Phillippi racks up 1:10 of RT before Orine escape. 1-0 -1:10 of RT

3rd – Phillippi chooses down and evens it 1-1 with 1:38 left. Into OT.

SV1 – Orine with the throw on the edge for the win.

The very first Pack wrestler to ever win the 133-pound ACC title.

Wolfpack Gets Third Individual ACC Title

125 pounds:

No. 1 Jarrett Trombley (NC State) vs. No. 2 Eddie Ventresca (VT)

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Ventresca chooses down and escapes in 11 seconds for the first point. 0-1 +0:11 of RT

3rd – Trombley chooses down and evens it 1-1 with 1:52 left. Into OT.

SV1 – Stall on Trombley for fleeing the mat as Ventresca had an ankle. Ventresca in on another deep shot, Trombley defense. Trombley with a shot, takedown with seven seconds left.

Pack wins 125-pound title for the second straight year, third time in last four.

Another Heavyweight Title For NC State Wrestling

Heavyweight:

No. 2 Owen Trephan (N.C. State) vs. No. 1 Jonah Niesenbaum (Duke)

1st – Niesenbaum tries a double, Trephan counters and gets the takedown then swipes – four of them for a 6-0 lead 1 minute in. Escape Niesenbaum after 52 seconds of RT. 6-1 +0:52 of RT

2nd – Niesenbaum chooses down and escapes in 8 seconds, but Trephan takes RT up to 1:00. 6-2 +1:00 of RT

3rd – Trephan chooses down and escapes in 4 seconds, but RT goes under a minute. 7-2 victory for Trephan.

The title at heavyweight is the Pack’s 19th all-time, the most at any weight among all ACC schools.

Isaac Trumbley Falls Short At 197 pounds:

197 pounds:

No. 3 Isaac Trumble (NC State) vs. No. 1 Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt)

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Trumble defers, Bonaccorsi chooses down. Trumble called for locked hands, and then Bonaccorsi gets the escape for a pair of points after 34 seconds of RT. 0-2 +0:34 of RT

3rd – Trumble chooses down and escapes in 14 seconds. That is all the scoring, Trumble falls 2-1.

Trent Hidlay Wins Third Straight Title, Pack Clinches Conference Crown (7:45 p.m.)

184 pounds:

No. 1 Trent Hidlay (NC State) vs. No. 3 Gavin Kane (UNC)

1st – Stall call on Kane. Scoreless first.

2nd – Kane chooses down and escapes in 3 seconds. Kane called for a second stall and Hidlay evens the score. Another stall on Kane, Hidlay with a point again. 2-1 -0:03 of RT

3rd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes after 12 seconds. Hidlay attacks the leg for a takedown with 1 minute left, Kane quick escape. Final takedown with 16 seconds left to secure the 7-2 win.

With his third straight conference title, Hidlay also mathematically clinches an ACC title for NC State wrestling, its fifth straight.

NC State’s Alex Faison Nearly Gets Huge Upset (7:31 p.m.)

174 pounds:

No. 2 Alex Faison (NC State) vs. No. 1 Mekhi Lewis (VT)

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Lewis chooses down and escapes in 5 seconds. 0-1 +0:05 RT

3rd – Faison chooses down and escapes in 8 seconds to even it 1-1 with 1:52 left. All even going into OT.

SV1 – No score

TB1 – Lewis chooses down to start and escapes after 14 seconds. Faison chooses down, but does not get the escape as Lewis wins 2-1 in OT.

NC State Wrestling Goes 1 For 2 In Third Place Bouts (5:50 p.m.)

157: No. 3 Ed Scott major (NC State) dec. No. 5 Jake Keating (UVA); 15-6
165: No. 1 Holden Heller (Pitt) dec. No. 3 Matty Singleton (NC State); 10-7

Scott earns an automatic bid for the NCAAs, Singleton must await the at-large announcements.

Singleton was down 8-1 after the first. Started on top, got a two-point turn and then a four-point turn and rode him out in the second to get it to 8-7 with +1 minute or RT going into the third. Heller got a late takedown in the third to seal the win.

Update After Consolation Bouts (5:20 p.m.)

Here is a recap of NC State wrestling in the consolation semifinals:

Both will wrestle for 3rd, and a win would grab an NCAA bid and a loss would be trying for an at-large bid.

TB1 – Catka chooses down for first 30 seconds and gets out after six seconds. Trephan chooses down for the second 30 seconds and gets out after five seconds. With a ride time advantage of just one second, Trephan advances to the final.

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Augustine chooses down and escapes after 11 seconds. Faison in for the double and converts midway through the period for the bout’s first takedown. Faison keeps him down the rest of the period. 2-1 +1:12 of RT.

3rd – Both enter the third with a stall call. Faison chooses down and escapes before RT gets under 1 minute (1:04). Faison hit with a second stall with 40 seconds left. Out of bounds with 3 seconds left. Faison advances to the final with a 4-2 win.

He will face top seed Mekhi Lewis of VT.

184 pounds:

No. 1 Trent Hidlay (NC State) vs. No. 5 Reece Heller (Pitt)

1st – After some flying arm bars, Hidlay strikes 45 seconds in with a takedown. Heller escape after 18 seconds. Hidlay hunts again for a takedown on the edge and keeps him down the rest of the period. 4-1 +2:07 of RT

2nd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes after 14 second. Hidlay with a shot of a Heller attack for a third takedown 30 seconds in. Heller escape, but he turns right into another takedown midway through. Heller escape after Hidlay can’t turn a cradle into near fall points. Another Hidlay takedown with 10 seconds left. 11-3 +3:10 of RT

3rd – Heller chooses down, Hidlay gives the escape. Hidlay chases another takedown, hunting for bonus with a second stall on Heller. 14-4 with 1 minute left. A pair of swipes with 21 seconds left followed by a late Heller escape. A major is not enough, takedown in the final 10 seconds and a four-point near fall for the 23-5 tech fall.

He will face UNC’s Kane (who scored a very late takedown on VT’s Bolen) in the final, a rematch from last year.

197 pounds:

No. 3 Isaac Trumble (NC State) vs. No. 2 Andy Smith (VT)

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Trumble defers, Smith chooses down. Trumble turns him for a pair of swipes midway through. VT challenges the near fall, calls stands two for Trumble with 0:33 left. Smith escape late. 2-1 +1:32 RT

3rd – Trumble chooses down and escapes after five seconds to keep RT above 1 minute. Smith goes double, down to an ankle but Trumble gets the stalemate at 1:06. Trumble reverses a Smith shot with 25 seconds left for a final takedown. With 1:50 of RT, he gets revenge for a dual loss with a 6-1 win.

A Second NC State Wrestler Falls In Semifinals (2:17 p.m.)

165 pounds:

No. 3 Matty Singleton (NC State) vs. No. 2 Justin McCoy (UVA)

1st – Singleton with the leg, McCoy rolls through and after a scramble gets a takedown midway through and keeps him down the rest of the period. 0-2 -1:09 RT

2nd – Singleton chooses down and escapes after 30 seconds. Singleton chases the leg, but again McCoy gets the advantage for a takedown with 34 seconds left. Singleton gets the escape with 15 seconds left. 2-4 -1:56 of RT.

3rd – McCoy chooses down and gives the escape after 10 seconds. After the ride time point, McCoy takes a 6-2 decision.

First Lost For Wolfpack In Semifinal Round (2:03 p.m.)

157 pounds:

No. 3 Ed Scott (NC State) vs. No. 2 Bryce Andonian (VT)

1st – Scott with a takedown 22 seconds in, Andonian quick escape. Upper body lock, Andonian comes out on top with a takedown and four-point near fall with 40 seconds left. 2-7 -0:38 of RT

2nd – Scott chooses down. Andonian with a two-point near fall before Scott escape. Scott with a throw-by for a takedown, Andonian then with a reversal. 5-11 -0:49 of RT

3rd – Andonian chooses down, Scott gives escape to start neutral. Scott takedown and Andonian escape. After a stall call, Andonian with a takedown in final minute. Scott adds late reversal. Andonian downs Scott 15-9.

NC State Now Four-For-Four Into Finals (1:53 p.m.)

149 pounds:

No. 2 Jackson Arrington (NC State) vs. No. 3 Jarod Verkleeren (UVA)

1st – Upper body lock, Verkleeren advantage for the takedown halfway through the period. Arrington escape after 40 seconds. 1-2 -0:40 of RT

2nd – Arrington chooses down and escapes halfway through period, but Verkleeren takes RT to 1:41. 2-2 -1:41 of RT

3rd – Verkleeren chooses down, Arrington gives him the escape. Arrington locks in a cradle for the takedown with 1:45 left and keeps him down the rest of the period for a 4-3 win to advance.

Three-For-Three Into Finals (1:45 p.m.)

141 pounds:

No. 2 Ryan Jack (NC State) vs. No. 3 Lachlan McNeil (UNC)

1st – Jack in on high crotch, but McNeil comes around for the first takedown with 1:45 left. Jack escape after 58 seconds. 1-2 -0:58 of RT

2nd – McNeil chooses down and escapes in 28 seconds. 1-3 -0:30 of RT

3rd – Jack chooses down and escapes in 25 seconds to pull within on and RT still under 1 minute. Jack gets the leg again, takedown with 40 seconds left. Jack keeps him down the remaining 40 seconds. UNC throws the brick looking for locked hands at the end. Call stands, Jack with the 4-3 win.

Jack will get a rematch of last year’s ACC final with top seed Cole Matthews of Pitt.

First Two Finalists For NC State Wrestling (1:30 p.m.)

125 pounds:

No. 1 Jarrett Trombley (NC State) vs. No. 4 Colton Camacho (Pitt)

1st – Trombley goes upper body with a go-behind and takedown 30 seconds in. Racks up 1:30 of RT before Camacho escape. Trombley tries a duck-under but Camacho counters for a takedown in final 30 seconds. Pack challenges late escape before time expired, decision reversed, Trombley escape with 2 seconds left. 3-3 +1:06 RT

2nd – Trombley chooses down, and gets a reversal 10 seconds in. Turns him for swipes, a four-count near the end of the period. 9-3 +2:51of RT.

3rd – Camacho chooses down. Escape Camacho 20 seconds in. A second stall on Trombley late. With the ride time point (3:08) Trombley scored a 10-5 win.

For the eighth straight year, NC State has a finalist at 125 pounds. Trombley will wrestle Ventresca from VT in the final.

133 pounds:

No. 3 Kai Orine (NC State) vs. No. 2 Sam Latona (VT)

1st – Scoreless 1st.

2nd – Latona chooses down and escapes after 30 seconds. 0-1 +0:30 of RT for Orine

3rd – Orine chooses down and evens it up with 1:49 left, RT no factor. Latona with the bout’s first takedown with 1:18 left. Orine escape with 1:04 left to pull within one. Orine in on high crotch and takedown with 22 seconds left. Out of bounds, 10 seconds on the restart. Orine close to near fall points, Latona close to reversal, confusion on mat with refs.

Call stands after review, Orine with the 4-3 win to advance to the final.
