NC State wrestling at NCAA Championship day three live blog

NC State wrestling is hoping to finalize a top-10 finish today with three competitors still alive at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Updates throughout the day can be found here.

The Pack entered the day in ninth place.

Here is how day two went for NC State wrestling.

NCAA Championship concludes for NC State wrestling

133 pounds:

7th Place Bout: No. 5 Kai Orine (NC State – 18-7) vs. No. 6 Sam Latona (Virginia Tech – 26-7) – 3rd match-up of the season, Latona won the dual and Orine won at the ACC Championship.

1st – Latona goes low, fought off by Orine for a stalemate at 1:41. Latona gets the leg up but does not finish the takedown. Scoreless first.

2nd – Orine chooses down and out in 15 seconds. Orine gets in on the leg, but stalemate with 17 seconds left. 1-0

3rd – Latona chooses down and escapes in 15 seconds to even it with 1:45 left. Latona late shot, takedown with 12 seconds left. Orine falls 3-1

Orine earns his first All-American honor with an eighth place finish.

157 pounds:

5th Place Bout: No. 8 Ed Scott (NC State – 23-9) vs. No. 3 Peyton Robb (Nebraska – 28-3). 2nd match-up of the season, 3rd all-time. Robb won all previous three, including 8-2 and 5-3 this year.

No match for Scott as Robb will medically forfeit.

Scott earns his first All-American honor with a fifth place finish.

184 pounds:

3rd Place Bout: No. 2 Trent Hidlay (NC State – 24-2) vs. No. 6 Kaleb Romero (Ohio State – 26-6). 3rd all-time match-up, Hidlay has won the previous two, including 4-1 this year.

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes in 16 seconds. Stalling on Romero midway through. 1-0, -0:16 riding time (RT)

3rd – Romero chooses down and evens it up with 1:45 left. 1-1 going into OT.

SV1 – Very late shot by Romero, refs going to review to look for a takedown in final seconds. No takedown originally given. Takedown given though after review with 1 seconds left.

Hidlay falls 3-1.

Hidlay earns his fourth All-American honor (third while competing at the NCAAs) with a fourth place finish.

1st – Stall on Coleman midway through. Scoreless first.

2nd – Coleman chooses down, and gets a reversal 33 seconds in. Hidlay quick escape. Hidlay drops him down at the 1:15 mark for a takedown and rides him out. 3-2 Hidlay, +1:37 riding time (RT)

3rd – Hidlay chooses down, Coleman hit with a second stall so point Hidlay. Coleman still on top and RT under 1 minute. Escape, 5-2 with 1:12 left. Hidlay takes the 5-2 decision.

Moves into the third place bout.

Scott falls in day opener (11:35 a.m.)

157 pounds

No. 8 Ed Scott (NC State – 23-8) vs. No. 5 Josh Humphreys (Lehigh – 19-1) – Rematch from a dual earlier this year, that Scott lost when he chose down and got turned.

1st – Humphreys collects a takedown with 24 seconds left. 0-2 Humphreys, -0:24 riding time (RT)

2nd – Scott chooses down, great work by Scott to get out 30 seconds in. Scott dumps him, but no score. 1-2 Humphreys, -0:50 RT

3rd – Humphreys chooses down and gets the reversal 10 seconds in. Escape by Scott. Quick shot by Humphreys for the takedown with 1:30 left. Scott escape in final 30 seconds, but RT secured.

Scott falls 7-3 and moves into the fifth place match.
