NC State wrestling is looking to build off a fifth-straight ACC title by registering a second podium finish at NCAA Championship under head coach Pat Popolizio. To do so, the Pack will need to finish in the top four of the team standings.

Heavyweight:

No. 7 Owen Trephan – NC State (22-3) vs. No. 10 Zach Elam (Missouri – 19-3)

1st – Elam with a go-behind and takedown in final 10 seconds. 0-2, Elam

2nd – Trephan chooses down but Elam rides out the period. 0-2, Elam; -2:05 RT

3rd – Elam chooses down and escapes in 20 seconds. Riding time gets locked in.

Trephan falls 4-0.

Trephan will be in the consolation bracket for NC State wrestling tomorrow.

Trent Hidlay advances to quarterfinals (10:01 p.m.)

184 pounds:

No. 2 Trent Hidlay – NC State (21-1) vs. No. 18 Brian Soldano (Rutgers – 23-10)

1st – Hidlay with a takedown about 45 seconds in. Escape for Soldano after 21 seconds. Hidlay with a second takedown at the 1:30 mark, Rutgers throws the brick. Call reversed, no takedown. Late stall on Soldano. 2-1 Hidlay, +0:21 RT

2nd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes in 7 seconds. Hidlay collects a second takedown with 40 seconds left, and gets a pair of swipes. 7-1 Hidlay, +0:54 RT

3rd – Soldano chooses down. Hidlay gets RT over 1 minute before Soldano escape. Hidlay quick takedown. Soldano escapes, another Hidlay takedown followed by Soldano escape but the RT is locked.

1st – Smith quick takedown in first 20 seconds, Trumble escape. Smith another takedown with a headlock and pin with 45 seconds left in the first.

Trumble will be in the consolation bracket for NC State tomorrow.

In other action, Alex Faison was eliminated in wrestleback after a 3-2 decision loss.

No. 8 Ed Scott – NC State (19-7) vs. No. 9 Will Lewan (Michigan – 22-6)

1st – Lewan tries a throw, Scott blocks it, but Lewan gets the leg and the takedown with 1:45 left. Escape Scott after 15 seconds. Stall warning on Lewan. 1-2

2nd – Lewan chooses down and escapes in 8 seconds. Lewan goes upper body and takedown midway through the period. Scott escape with 30 seconds left. 2-5 Lewan, -0:35 riding time (RT)

3rd – Scott chooses down and gets the escape in two seconds to pull within a takedown. Lewan doesn’t let up, another takedown with 1:30 left, Scott escape before RT gets to 1 minute. Second stall on Lewan gives a point to Scott with 1:00 left.

No. 5 Ryan Jack – NC State (21-3) vs. #12 Parker Filius (Purdue – 22-9)

1st – Filius collects the leg, but Jack gets off the mat with 1:17 left. Purdue throws the brick, looking for a takedown before the reaction time. No takedown. Jack goes low, elevates the leg, takedown with 1:03 left. Filius escape after about 30 seconds. 2-1 Jack

2nd – Jack chooses down and escapes after 25 seconds. Filius attacks again, pulls Jack back onto the mat, but Jack still gets out of bounds with 44 seconds left. Jack hit with a stall with 19 seconds left. Jack goes low, takedown with 5 seconds left. 5-1 Jack

3rd – Filius chooses down and escapes in 15 seconds, but Jack gets hit with a second stall before. Filius then scores a quick takedown to tie it with 1:15 left before a Jack escape. Filius takedown with 34 seconds left to go up 7-6 and gets called for a stall for staying on the legs. Reset at 18 seconds with Jack down 1. Refs to review the scoring, stays. Jack can not escape.

Jack falls 7-6

No. 16 Jackson Arrington – NC State (21-7) vs. No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell – 17-1)

1st – Diakomihalis quick takedown, Arrington escape. Arrington dives in, Diakomihalis locks in a cradle for the takedown and get the first-period fall.

Arrington will be in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

NC State wrestling splits first two bouts of second round (7:42 p.m.)

125 pounds

No. 20 Jarrett Trombley – NC State (14-6) vs. No. 4 Matt Ramos (Purdue – 32-4)

1st – Ramos takedown with 18 seconds left in the period. 0-2, -0:18 riding time (RT)

2nd – Trombley chooses down and escapes in 7 seconds. Trombley gets in on the leg, but Ramos turns it into a stalemate with 50 seconds left. Ramos gets behind Trombley, but Trombley fights it off and turns it into his takedown with 25 seconds left. 3-2 Ramos

3rd – Ramos choose down and gets a reversal 15 seconds in. Trombley escape evens it with 1:40 left. 4-4 going into OT.

SV1 – Trombley shoots first, waterfall position, long scramble to a stalemate with 49 seconds left. Ramos shoots with 20 seconds left, Trombley holds it off and forces TB as time runs out.

TB1 – Ramos chooses down and Trombley rides him out whole period. Trombley chooses down and Ramos goes with optional start to give Trombley the escape. Stalemate with 10 seconds left. Romas attacks of the whistle and gets a takedown with 6 seconds left.

Trombley falls 6-5.

No. 5 Kai Orine – NC State (16-5) vs. #21 Chance Rich (Cal State. Bakersfield – 15-8)

1st – Orine in deep, and takedown with 47 seconds left. Orine rides out the period. 2-0 Orine, +0:47 RT

2nd – Orine chooses down and escapes in 7 seconds. Rich late attack, awarded a takedown as time runs out. But Cal State throws the brick before the takedown was awarded, and the phone appears to not be working, going to the cell phone – not sure why it was a challenge. Takedown given, 4 seconds left. Orine reverse, and two near fall in the final 4 seconds. 7-2, Orine

3rd – Rich chooses down and Orine gets RT above 1 minute. Swipes, 4 of them with 1 minute left – 11-2 with RT point coming.

Moving on with bonus points for NC State wrestling, Orine scores a 12-2 major decision.
