NC State wrestling is looking to build off a fifth-straight ACC title by registering a second podium finish at NCAA Championship under head coach Pat Popolizio. To do so, the Pack will need to finish in the top four of the team standings.

Action wrapped up for NC State tonight, three All-Americans in action tomorrow. Scott and Hidlay will have one bout early to determine if they go into the 3rd or 5th place bout, while Orine will be in the 7th place match.

No. 5 Kai Orine (NC State – 18-6) vs. No. 8 Aaron Nagao (Minnesota – 21-5)

1st – Orine dives low into both legs, takedown 40 seconds in. Nagao escape after 24 seconds. Orine again, low for the takedown and Nagao quick escape. 4-2 Orine, +0:28 riding time (RT)

2nd – Nagao chooses down, Orine with the stall while still on top, but RT gets over 1 minute. Escape by Nagao off the restart. 4-3 Orine, +1:05 RT

3rd – Orine chooses neutral. Orine low again, water fall position but Nagao captured the leg and takedown with 1:15 left for the lead, and takes RT under 1 minute. Stall on Nagao while on top. Orine cannot escape and falls 5-4.

Orine will be in the seventh place match tomorrow.

157 pounds:

No. 8 Ed Scott (NC State – 22-8) vs. #7 Bryce Andonian (Virginia Tech – 11-3)

1st – Andonian with the first takedown, followed by a Scott escape. Andonian with another takedown and pair of near fall points. Scott escape. 2-6 Andonian, -1:17 RT

2nd – Scott chooses down, and Andonian gives the escape. Scott strikes with a takedown 30 seconds in. RT goes under 1 minute before Andonian escape. 5-7 Andonian

3rd – Andonian chooses down and Scott gives the release. Scott takedown with 1:10 left pulls within one, gives the escape with 1:00 left. Scott takedown with 32 seconds left to even the score. Scott puts Andonian to his back, and gets a huge pin with 5 seconds left.

Scott will be in action tomorrow morning to determine if he makes the third place or fifth place bout.

184 pounds:

No. 2 Trent Hidlay (NC State – 23-1) vs. No. 3 Aaron Brooks (Penn State – 16-1)

1st – Brooks gets a leg, and takedown at the 1:45 mark. Hidlay escape after 15 seconds. Brooks strikes again with 1 minute left. 1-4 Brooks, -1:17 RT

2nd – Brooks chooses down and is out in 7 seconds. 1-5 Brooks, -1:08 RT

3rd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes, but RT up to 1:49. A second stall on Brooks gives Hidlay a point.

Hidlay falls 6-3.

Hidlay will be in action tomorrow morning to determine if he makes the third place or fifth place bout.

NC State wrestling has two more clinch All-American status (9:49 p.m.)

No. 5 Kai Orine (NC State – 17-6) vs. No. 15 Kyle Biscaglia (Northern Iowa – 22-10) – A rematch from Las Vegas that saw Orine hit a cement mixer late to win.

1st – Scoreless first.

2nd – Orine chooses down and is out in two seconds for the first point. Another cement mixer hit for Orine. Takedown and four swipes midway through the period. Escape in final seconds for Biscaglia. 7-1 Orine

3rd – Biscaglia chooses top. Stall on Orine with 45 seconds left. Biscaglia gets the ride out, but not a turn.

2023 All-American Kai Orine with a 7-1 decision.

Orine has one more bout on the night. Will face winner of No. 8 Aaron Nagao (Minnesota – 20-5) vs. No. 14 Zach Redding (Iowa State – 18-11)

141 pounds:

No. 16 Jackson Arrington (NC State – 23-8) vs. No. 6 Brock Mauller (Missouri – 18-3)

1st – Arrington late shot, counter by Mauller for the takedown with 5 seconds left. 0-2 Mauller

2nd – Arrington chooses down and gets on the scoreboard after 25 seconds. Arrington takedown midway through the period and rides him out the rest of the period. 3-2 Arrington

3rd – Mauller chooses neutral. Arrington collects the leg with 40 seconds left, but Mauller fights through with a takedown with 12 seconds left and Arrington cannot escape.

Arrington has been eliminated, one win shy of All-American honors as a true freshman, as he falls 4-3.

157 pounds:

No. 8 Ed Scott (NC State – 21-8) vs. No. 6 Daniel Cardenas (Stanford – 19-2)

1st – Cardenas with a takedown 30 seconds in, Scott escape after 30 seconds. Scott with the drive through for a takedown midway through, and Cardenas escape. 3-3, +0:16 riding time (RT) for Scott

2nd – Cardenas chooses down and escapes in 15 seconds to retake the lead. Scott in on the leg again, great defense by Cardenas late to hold it off. 3-4 Cardenas, +0:35 RT

3rd – Scott chooses down and evens it up with 1:52 left. Stall on Cardenas with 1:13 left. 4-4 going into OT.

SV1 – Cardenas shot off the whistle, Scott blocks and reshoots but no scoring. Scott goes low, gets to the thigh, takedown with 55 seconds left.

2nd – Trombley chooses down and Trombley escapes with riding time (RT) under 1 minute. More blood time for Poulin with 1:13 left. 4-5 Poulin, -0:49 RT

3rd – Poulin chooses down and gets the reversal, then a Trombley escape. 5-7 with 1 minute left, RT no factor. Trombley shoots late, Poulin with the defense and takedown.

Hidlay won the dual this year, 5-3 in OT. It was the first match-up between the two that had more than one takedown. Bolen won the first three showdowns between the two, but Hidlay has won the last three heading into their seventh all-time match-up.

1st – Stall called on Bolen 38 seconds in. Scoreless first.

2nd – Bolen chooses down and Hidlay rides out the period. 0-0, +2:00 riding time.

3rd – Hidlay chooses down and escapes after 9 seconds for the first point. Bolen then hit with a second stall, giving Hidlay a 2-0 lead with 1:45 left. Hidlay hit with a stall with 1:30 left. RT is secured. Takedown in final two seconds for Hidlay after Bolen shoots in.

1st – Jack shoots, but Hines comes out on top one minute in for the takedown. Jack escape with 1:06 left, but refs wave it off and Hines still on top. Hines gets four swipes in the final 10 seconds while riding out. 0-6 Hines, -1:59 riding time

2nd – Hines chooses down and gets the reversal 10 seconds in. Jack escapes. Hines with another takedown with 10 seconds left. 1-10 Hines, -2:23 RT

3rd – Jack chooses down and gets the escape in 20 seconds. Jack takedown, and he lets him up with 41 seconds left. Jack another takedown and release. Goes for the gator roll but gets caught for the takedown and swipes.

Jack falls by major decision 18-6 and has been eliminated from the tournament.

Orine falls to consolation bracket, Trombley stays alive (12:53 p.m.)

1st – Surtin with a throw late, but no takedown. Scoreless first.

2nd – Trombley chooses down and escapes in 39 seconds. 1-0 Trombley, -0:39 riding time (RT)

3rd – Surtin chooses down and evens it with 1:52 left. Trombley goes low and gets Surtin in the water fall position a couple of times but ref calls potentially dangerous with 0:42 left. Injury time for Surtin as his left knee got twisted. Trombley chooses down on the restart and his escape gives him the lead with 0:31 seconds left. Potentially dangerous again, restart with 0:12.
