NC State entered the week with a crucial two-game road swing that presented a pair of key resume-building opportunities at Virginia and Syracuse. But by the end of the stretch, NC State’s at-large hopes took another tumble — one that could have put the Wolfpack in too deep of a hole to escape.

The red and white dropped the Quad 1 opportunity at Virginia in overtime (after it scored just 15 points in the first 20 minutes) and then it did not play well at all at Syracuse, which was a borderline Quad 1-2 contest at the JMA Wireless Dome.

NC State’s NET ranking took a slide from No. 76 after the Virginia loss (which moved up three spots from 79) and then fell to No. 83 after its road defeat at Syracuse. This is the lowest NET ranking for the Pack this season after it started at No. 53 in the first set and has fallen since.

The Pack has a long way to go to position itself in a good spot for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, and it needs to make some noise with a couple Quad 1 wins. Here’s a look at NC State’s team sheet at this moment (and we will have a new update to this each week until Selection Sunday).

Team sheet notes

– Most of NC State’s non-conference schedule remains Quad 4 wins. The Wolfpack’s eight non-ACC wins are in that category, which does not help its NCAA Tournament resume, other than the fact NC State avoided any painful losses in that stretch.

– With the way Wake Forest has been playing, NC State fans should continue to root for the Demon Deacons the rest of the regular season, outside of the Pack’s game in Winston-Salem. Wake is just 17 spots away from becoming a Quad 1 home win for NC State, which would be helpful on the red and white’s team sheet.

Kevin Keatts‘ squad likely needed to win at Virginia and Syracuse to create positive momentum towards the NCAA at-large bid. It lost both games, and now NC State has to wait three games for its next Quad 1 chance, which comes at Wake Forest. The Wolfpack are going to have to win every non-Quad 1 game down the stretch, as well as a few of those Quad 1 contests to get on the bubble for the NCAA tournament.

– NC State welcomes Miami to town for a 9 p.m. tip Tuesday, and that contest will not be an easy one for the Wolfpack. The red and white are looking to snap a three-game losing streak, its longest stretch without a win since it lost five straight to close the 2021-22 campaign. That will be a Quad 2 game, and then its weekend contest against Georgia Tech qualifies as a Quad 3 chance, one the Pack surely can not lose for its at-large hopes.
