NC State has taken care of business against the teams it should beat on its schedule, but it has struggled to win its Quad 1 games so far this season. It is early in the season, and there is time for the Wolfpack to pick up a couple marquee wins before Selection Sunday in March.

At the moment, the Pack’s best win is its 76-60 win over Virginia earlier this month, and if Boston College can pick up a few wins to get into the top-75 of the NET rankings, NC State would have a Quad 1 win over the Eagles.

NC State had a chance to earn its first signature win of the season against North Carolina, the No. 7 team in the NET rankings, but it could not keep pace with the Tar Heels on Wednesday. The Pack fell from No. 65 to No. 72 after its loss to North Carolina, and then it fell down to No. 74 after it beat Louisville behind graduate guard DJ Horne‘s 27 points on the road on Saturday afternoon.

There is still a lot of time — 15 games — for the Wolfpack to position itself in a good spot for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, but it needs to pick up at least a couple Quad 1 wins. Here’s a look at NC State’s team sheet at this moment (and we will have a new update to this each week until Selection Sunday).

Team sheet notes

– Most of NC State’s non-conference schedule remains Quad 4 wins. The Wolfpack’s eight non-ACC wins are in that category, which does not help its NCAA Tournament resume, other than the fact NC State avoided any painful losses in that stretch.

– As noted earlier, the Wolfpack would like Boston College to win a few decent games in ACC play to move its NET ranking into the top-75. That would give NC State a Quad 1 road win, which would be the start of a decent resume. Boston College is 1-4 to start ACC play, but like NC State, has plenty of chances to improve its stock.

– NC State does not have any losses outside of Quad 1, which is a helpful building block for the Pack should it win a few in that category down the stretch. If the Pack can avoid any Quad 3 or Quad 4 losses in the final 15 games, which there’s currently three games left at the moment in that category, NC State would be in a decent spot.

– The Pack’s next Quad 1 chance is at Virginia next week and then it will have to wait until mid-February for its next crack at one of those wins at Wake Forest and at Clemson. The red and white could make noise late in the ACC schedule with two Quad 1 opportunities at North Carolina and against Duke in two of the final three games of the season. That could turn some heads in the selection committee room going into the ACC tournament if the Pack can win one or both of those contests.
