NC State’s defensive revamp through the transfer portal isn’t done just yet. The Wolfpack landed a commitment from North Texas transfer cornerback Brian Nelson II as he signed with the program, On3 learned on Friday afternoon.

Nelson was the top available cornerback in the transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The rising redshirt sophomore has three years of eligibility remaining.

The Pearland, Texas, native posted 53 tackles with three passes defended and four interceptions in 12 games with eight starts during his first full season of college football. He was second in the American Athletic Conference in takeaways, while he led the Eagles in that department.

Nelson, a 6-foot corner, faced 49 targets, while he allowed just 27 receptions for 375 total yards and two touchdowns this past season. He gave up an average of 4.2 yards per reception allowed in his first campaign as a consistent player at the college level.

Although Nelson played in just four games as a freshman to keep his redshirt, he logged six tackles with three passes defended in just 31 coverage snaps.

Before he arrived at North Texas, Nelson posted four pass breakups with seven interceptions in 12 games as a senior at Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek High in the state’s top classification. Nelson was a three-star recruit, according to Rivals, coming out of high school.

Nelson projects to play outside cornerback for the Wolfpack this season, bringing more competition to the position group going into fall camp. He joins a cornerback room headlined by former Temple transfer Jamel Johsnon, senior Devon Marshall and redshirt junior Jackson Vick.

In addition to Nelson, NC State’s defense has added three edge rushers — Joseph Adedire (Texas Tech), Cian Slone (Utah State) and Sabastian Harsh (Wyoming) — and Northwestern transfer Kenny Soares Jr. since spring practice ended
