These days in college athletics, the transfer portal does not take a break for anyone. And, well, that was no different on the Fourth of July as NC State landed a versatile infielder Thursday night.

Ole Miss utility transfer Trenton Lyons, a rising sophomore, committed to the Wolfpack on the nation’s birthday, bolstering NC State’s depth on the infield for the 2025 campaign. The rising sophomore played three positions — catcher, first and second — with the Rebels in his debut season.

Lyons appeared in 22 games with seven starts at Ole Miss. He hit .256 with a double and three RBI for the Rebels. Lyons posted a .326 on-base percentage with 10 hits and four walks in 39 total at-bats.

While he did not have consistent at-bats throughout the season, Lyons’ most impressive outing came with a 1-for-3 showing against Mississippi State on April 13, where he logged a career-best two RBI. He had an RBI single in the first and an RBI groundout in the eighth, both key runs in the Rebels’ 10-9 win over the Bulldogs in 12 innings.

Lyons is currently playing summer collegiate baseball with the Holly Springs Salamanders in the Coastal Plains League. He’s hitting .293 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and 12 RBI. Lyons, however, has improved on his strikeout rate with just 15 to go with eight walks in 99 at-bats. The utility man has 17 stolen bases in 28 games with the Salamanders this year.

Although Lyons was primarily a catcher at Ole Miss, he is listed on the Salamanders’ roster as a shortstop, showing more of his versatility in the infield just down the road from Raleigh this summer. He has also caught four games and played third in two this summer.

Lyons was selected to the CPL All-Star Game, which is set for Monday night in Forest City, N.C.

But before Lyons started his college career, he was among one of the top high school prospects in the 2023 MLB Draft. He presented a high signability figure, and did not budge from it, leading to his arrival at the college level.

The Memphis, Tenn., standout impressed at the MLB Draft Combine in 2023, where he posted the highest exit velocity in the game with 100.4 mph. He was the only player to post an above-average number off the bat in the contest.

Lyons is the Wolfpack’s fifth transfer portal addition this offseason. The Pack previously added Campbell outfielder Dalen Thompson, UNC Greensboro right-hander Julien Peissel, Georgia Tech third baseman Ryan Jaros and Vanderbilt first baseman Matt Ossenfort.
