NC State lost four defensive backs to the transfer portal in the waning minutes it was open last week, making an immediate need in the secondary. And it didn’t take long for the Pack to find a replacement.

Temple transfer cornerback Jamel Johnson committed to NC State on Monday after he officially visited Raleigh over the weekend, he told TheWolfpacker.com.

Johnson logged 47 total tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, with two interceptions and 11 passes defended in his first season of FBS football. He began his career at FCS Charleston Southern, where Johnson recorded 65 total tackles and four interceptions across two seasons.

The Covington, Ga., native was impressive in coverage at Temple. He allowed just 17 receptions on 46 targets (37% completion rate), according to Pro Football Focus, which included the nearly a dozen passes defended. Johnson was also able to minimize yards allowed after the catch, conceding just 54 total (3.1 per completion), while he allowed just a pair of receptions of more than 40 yards this past season.

Johnson was also a capable tackler. He had a season-best eight tackles in the Owls’ 45-29 win over Utah State on Sept. 21. The defensive back also logged at least four stops in six of Temple’s 12 games this past fall. Johnson logged just four missed tackles, which was good for an 8.3% missed tackle rate.

The defensive back will provide stability and depth to the Wolfpack’s cornerbacks room as he projects to play on the outside in D.J. Eliot’s 3-4 scheme. Johnson logged 543 snaps at cornerback this past season, while he also lined up in the box 76 times and was in the slot for 21 snaps.

Johnson is NC State’s seventh transfer portal commitment of the cycle. He joins cornerback Jaren Sensabaugh (Missouri) linebacker AJ Richardson (Norfolk State), offensive linemen Brock Stukes (NC A&T), Jalen Grant (Purdue) and Teague Anderson (Utah State) and tight end Cody Hardy (Elon).
