After a less-than-authoritative start to the 2022 NC State football season with a close call against East Carolina last Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C., the Pack is prepared for the home opener. NC State will host Charleston Southern in a game that is more about the Wolfpack than the opponent.

With host Justin H. Williams, The Wolfpacker’s Matt Carter dive into the NC State-Charleston Southern game from multiple angles in our weekly opponent preview podcast episode, which can be seen and heard below.

Among the many topics discussed:

• In a new segment called “Upon Further Review,” Justin and Matt look back at the 21-20 win over East Carolina last Saturday. NC State took a fall in the Associated Press poll down to No. 18, 5 spots below the preseason ranking. Was that an overreaction or justified?

Are there more positives to take away from the rivalry win than perhaps originally appreciated, and what are the concerns for NC State?

• A quick synopsis of Charleston Southern and why at a minimum, despite being a mediocre Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team, the Buccaneers could at least prove to be entertaining and perhaps a small warm-up act for the marquee non-conference game on the NC State slate — Texas Tech the following Saturday in Raleigh.

• The impact of losing fifth-year redshirt junior tight end Trent Pennix for 4-6 weeks with a non-surgical arm-related injury, and speculation on whether or not his classmate and linebacker Payton Wilson should play Saturday for NC State against Charleston Southern. Wilson has a sore shoulder. Would he be better off resting to prepare for Texas Tech?

• A look back at the opening week for the Atlantic Coast Conference, and why going forward the league needs to look at playing so many road games with Group of Five opponents. While there is entertainment value for regional fans in some of the games, does the ACC have anything to gain from playing those types of contests?

• And much more!
