Hopes of starting the 2022 NC State football season with an authoritative performance against East Carolina, on Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, N.C., quickly vanished. Instead, the Wolfpack had to count on good luck to pull out a 21-20 win over the Pirates thanks to a pair of missed kicks in the final three minutes by East Carolina.
With host Justin H. Williams, The Wolfpacker’s Matt Carter dive into the NC State-East Carolina game from multiple angles in our weekly Postgame Reflections podcast episode, which can be seen and heard below.

Among the many topics discussed:
• What happened? The two each offer their thoughts on how the game played out, and why ultimately this boiled down to NC State football missing an opportunity in the second half to potentially put the game away and thus opening the door for a strong East Carolina finish.
A pair of goal line failures at the 1-yard line — one a turnover and the other being stopped — in particular stood in the way of a much more comfortable afternoon for NC State.
• What to take away from the game? Should NC State fans be concerned, especially with the offense? What needs to get better in coming weeks before ACC play starts in October?
On the flip side, what did work well for NC State on Saturday, and are there reasons for optimism that if the Pack can put everything together moving forward that the season will still be a big success?
• Grades for each side of the ball, with the offense understandably taking the lowest score of the afternoon, and also for the team overall. Plus thoughts on East Carolina’s performance and perhaps what the season holds for ECU going forward this year.

• Who gets The Wolfpacker’s game balls from the NC State win? Matt in particular goes off the board with his choice, while Justin takes perhaps a more expected guess for his game ball.
• Why the Texas Tech game on Sept. 17 may now loom larger than perhaps expected going into the season for NC State.
• And much more!
