The Wolfpacker Podcast: NC State football and hoops talk
There has been a lot going on in the world of NC State athletics over the past few weeks. On the football side, the Wolfpack made a big splash by landing a verbal commitment from coveted Virginia quarterback transfer Brennan Armstrong, who announced his decision over the weekend.
The On3 transfer portal rankings have Armstrong rated the second best available quarterback.
Then on the NC State basketball side of things, the Wolfpack is 13-4 overall and 3-3 in the ACC after a big week on the hardcourt, crushing Duke at home and then topping Virginia Tech on the road to secure a pair of Quad 1 victories, rapidly building a case to be in the picture for the NCAA Tournament with about two months left before Selection Sunday.
Among the topics hosts Matt Carter and Justin H. Williams discussed discussed a wide variety of topics in the latest episode of The Wolfpacker podcast:
• After a very brief rundown of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl loss in Charlotte to Maryland, the duo quickly pivot to the big news in NC State football, the addition of Armstrong.
Carter goes into detail about how the move makes total sense in the big picture, provided that there is no consternation about the potential of a current quarterback on the roster choosing to transfer. Armstrong’s familiarity with new NC State offensive coordinator Robert Anae’s system and terminology allows the Pack to develop their younger quarterbacks, especially since rising sophomore MJ Morris still has a redshirt year available to him, at their own respective pace.
• In a very quick look ahead to next year, the addition of Armstrong should help mitigate the drop-off that had been anticipated to take place after the 2022 season, but as Carter noted the ACC could have a new top-dog next season. Do not be surprised if Florida State ends up being the conference favorite instead of Clemson, and Williams noted that would be a good thing for the league.

• Why adding another receiver in the transfer portal makes total sense for NC State, but also how that is much easier said than done. Supply and demand means that teams have to make decisions about how best to utilize NIL. In the case of NC State, that is more likely to be used for retainment rather than enticement.
• Was the 2022 NC State football season a success or failure? The Pack was touted as a potential sleeper pick for the ACC title yet ended the year unranked with an 8-5 overall record. However, circumstances made the year much more challenging than anticipated.
Both Carter and Williams thought the answer was in the gray area.
• A pivot to basketball and Williams explains why he is already checking bracketology and getting excited about NC State’s chances to getting back to the Big Dance. Carter expresses more caution, noting a specific conference record he thinks the Wolfpack needs to hit going into the month of February.
And much more!
