The Wolfpacker Podcast: NC State wrestling vs. UNC preview
This is a big weekend for the Wolfpack rivalry with North Carolina, and the action is not just limited to the men’s basketball team on Sunday, with an important 1 p.m. tipoff for both teams at PNC Arena in Raleigh. Additionally, the women’s hoops team will host UNC at historic Reynolds Coliseum on Thursday. Then on Friday, NC State wrestling will make the short trek to Chapel Hill to dual against the Tar Heels in Carmichael Gymnasium.
However, the UNC-NC State wrestling rivalry has been one-sided lately, with the Wolfpack taking the last nine showdowns between the two squads. If NC State keeps that streak going Friday, then the Pack will clinch a share of the ACC regular season title. Currently, the Wolfpack is tied with Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh. Both of those teams are heavily favored in their duals with Virginia and Duke, respectively.
To get NC State wrestling fans ready for Friday’s dual at North Carolina, TheWolfpacker.com hosts Stu Coman and Brian Reinhardt had a special guest: former Pack three-time All-American and two-time ACC champion Tariq Wilson. In 2022, Wilson capped his NC State wrestling career by being ACC champ and All-American at 149 pounds, giving him his third different weight classification in which he reached A-A status.

Wilson updated NC State fans of what has kept him busy lately and what may interest him down the road in the sport, and he also goes in depth of what the rivalry with North Carolina is like for those in the Pack wrestling room, including head coach Pat Popolizio. Wilson even recalled a side bet Popolizio once had with Wilson and another wrestler going into a dual with UNC (hint: it involved dinner).
Wilson also broke down some of the matchups for Friday’s dual, and along with Reinhardt gave a prediction with how the match will play out.
