NC State sophomore quarterback MJ Morris will redshirt for the final three games of the Wolfpack’s season, TheWolfpacker.com learned.

Morris, who started the past four games for NC State, was originally supposed to redshirt the entire season with graduate quarterback Brennan Armstrong as the team’s starter. But after five games, NC State coach Dave Doeren inserted Morris into the lineup to “spark” the team.

It worked as NC State went on a 3-1 run with Morris under center with wins over Marshall, Clemson and Miami. In the victory over the Thundering Herd, the Wolfpack posted its highest point total since 2018.

Morris was 63-of-113 passing for 719 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions through his four starts this season. He posted a 120.3 passer rating, and was sacked nine times.

The Wolfpack is expected to turn back to Armstrong, who was 94-of-160 passing for 971 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions in his five starts. The Virginia transfer also posted a 112.5 passer rating and was sacked nine times as the Pack’s starter.

Armstrong is also a dynamic runner, who has posted 81 carries for 337 yards and three touchdowns this season.

“Super proud and happy for Brennan,” Doeren said after Armstrong’s team-high 51 yards against Miami. “He’s taken a lot of unnecessary criticism and it was great to hear the crowd cheer for him tonight. And our team has been cheering for him, and that meant a lot to me and to him.”

After the news broke, The Wolfpacker Show hosts Ethan McDowell and Noah Fleischman sat down to break down Morris’ decision.

In this episode, they discussed:

*** Their initial thoughts on Morris’ decision, and its impact on the Wolfpack’s offense. Did is surprise them, or did they see this coming?

*** How Armstrong can fit into NC State’s offense after Morris’ redshirt. The offense has changed since Armstrong last played as the team’s starter, and he may slide back in seamlessly this weekend at Wake Forest.

*** What this means for NC State in the future, either if Morris decides to stay in Raleigh or enter the transfer portal.

*** What the Wolfpack could possibly target in the transfer portal to add depth to the quarterback room if Morris decides to depart after the season.

All of those topics and more are discussed on Tuesday’s show, which is available in audio and video on TheWolfpacker.com’s YouTube channel.
