The Wolfpacker Show: Observations from NC State's first day of fall camp
NC State football fall camp officially kicked off Wednesday, July 31. For the first time this summer, the Wolfpack hit the practice field in uniform and did so with a ton of energy. The path to achieve their ACC title dreams begins with the next few weeks.
TheWolfpacker.com attended the first nine periods of NC State’s practice. Even though this was the first day, we still took note of some players who appeared to make offseason improvements.
After the event, The Wolfpacker Show hosts Noah Fleischman and Ethan McDowell sat down to record another episode about what they saw Wednesday.
In this episode, The Wolfpacker Show hosts discussed:
*** Their general excitement around the return of NC State football. The Wolfpack has high expectations as a team this year, and the hosts are looking forward to chronicling the journey alongside all of you.

*** Ethan and Noah talked about three important position battles to watch during fall camp — cornerback, wide receiver and left guard. It’s just the first day of practice, but the hosts saw enough to have a couple of takeaways on each position group. Notably, redshirt-junior offensive lineman Matt McCabe took the initial first-strings reps at left guard during drills.
*** Then, the hosts went position by position to discuss the most significant storylines coming out of practice No. 1. Head coach Dave Doeren was encouraged by the program’s competitive depth and shouted out redshirt freshman nickel Tamarcus Cooley and freshman wide receiver Keenan Jackson after practice for stepping up on Day 1 to make a few impressive plays.
*** Defensively, the secondary looks the part physically. Noah and Ethan talked about how important it was for the Pack to add experience to the unit. On offense, NC State’s wide receiver corps should be very fun to watch this fall. Freshman wide receiver Jonathan Paylor looks ready to contribute immediately.
