The Wolfpacker Show: NC State running back preview
NC State has just under a month until it opens fall camp ahead of the 2024 football season. As the team prepares to return to the gridiron, TheWolfpacker.com is previewing each position group with in-depth reporting and features.
This week is all about the running back position. The Wolfpacker Show, hosted by Ethan McDowell and Noah Fleischman, broke down NC State’s tailbacks during the preview podcast series.
In this episode, the hosts discussed:
– Who left the running back room after the 2023 season and who the Wolfpack replaced them with going into the new campaign this fall. The Pack had three players depart — all due to the transfer portal — and it brought in four running backs to boost the position group.
– Duke transfer Jordan Waters headlines the position group with his proven abilities in the backfield. He rushed for 819 yards and an ACC-best 12 touchdowns on 153 carries last fall with the Blue Devils. How does he fit in with NC State? Noah and Ethan broke that down.
– Outside of Waters, who else is in the mix for a bevy of carries this season? Noah and Ethan pointed out two running backs that are in line for a lot of usage, while a freshman tailback could make some noise this fall.

– Ethan raved about Oklahoma transfer Hollywood Smothers, a former top recruit in North Carolina and how he can impact the Wolfpack this fall. Smothers, a Charlotte, N.C., native, was previously teammates with NC State standout wideout Kevin “KC” Concepcion. Now, they are reunited in Raleigh.
– After breaking down the personnel in the group, Ethan and Noah picked one thing that excites them about the position and one thing that worries them going into the 2024 season.
– To end the show, the hosts took a few questions from TheWolfpacker.com subscribers about the running back room and answered them. More of those questions will be available in a mailbag later this week.
