A third player from the NC State basketball team has decided to enter the transfer portal. This time it is guard Thomas Allen, who has decided to try to pursue a super senior season somewhere else.

Previously, sophomore guard Cam Hayes revealed that he had chosen to leave NC State. Sophomore forward Jaylon Gibson had earlier also decided to entered the transfer portal.

This would be Allen’s third college, and it ends an unusual path to and relationship with NC State.

The Raleigh native and Garner (N.C.) High standout committed to former NC State basketball coach Mark Gottfried. After Gottfried was fired and Kevin Keatts hired to replace him, Allen decided to ask out of his letter of intent.

That led to Allen signing with Nebraska. In two seasons with the Cornhuskers, Allen played 61 games and made 25 starts. He averaged 8.7 points per game as a sophomore while averaging 30.2 minutes per contest that year.

Following the 2018-19 season, Allen decided to transfer and came full circle by signing with Keatts and NC State. Allen sat out the 2019-20 season per NCAA transfer rules (prior to the recent rule change that allowed players to transfer once without having to sit a year). During that time, Allen had ankle surgery to repair an injury he sustained in Nebraska.

Last season, Allen started 15 of 17 games that he played and averaged 7.4 points per game for the Wolfpack while shooting 37.9 percent (18 of 52) on three-pointers. A nagging foot injury hampered Allen this past season, limiting him to 26 games, six of them starts.

Allen saw his numbers dip to 14.2 minutes and 3.8 points per contest, although he shot 39.1 percent on threes (18 of 46).

Allen was one of two seniors on the NC State basketball roster this past year, joining forward Jericole Hellems, who is also expected to move on from the Wolfpack.
