NC State co-defensive coordinator Charlton Warren is well connected in the state of Georgia. He grew up in Conley, Ga. — just outside of Atlanta — and his connections around high school football continue to pay off in one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country.

One of his latest offers? Fayetteville (Ga.) Whitewater High three-star safety Markel Aguirre

Aguirre, whose brother, Raul, was recruited by Warren before committing to Miami in the 2023 cycle, already knew what the Pack’s defensive backs coach was about. But even so, when Warren stopped by his school and extended an offer shortly after last month, Aguirre was even more interested in the position coach and NC State.

“I like a coach that will go ahead and talk to me about his personal stuff — that’s building trust,” Aguirre told TheWolfpacker.com at the Under Armour Next camp in the Atlanta area on Sunday. “We talked about everything. He’s straightforward with me. He tells me where I’m going to play. He tells me a lot. I love Coach Warren.”

The nation’s No. 47 safety appreciated the way Warren not only took time out of his day to stop at Whitewater, which was a part of a criss-crossing road trip in the Peach State, but he was prepared with Aguirre’s film and knew a lot about the defensive back.

That was different from other schools that are courting Aguirre. Warren did his homework and was more than prepared to eventually offer the defensive back.

“The way he talked to me, it was communicative,” Aguirre said. “He was happy to be there. He was telling me how good of a player I am as he watched some of my film and broke it down.”

Aguirre, who stands at 6-foot, 185 pounds, posted 57 total tackles with 14 for a loss, 2 interceptions and a pass defended in his junior campaign. That stat line led to the safety picking up more than 15 offers in a two-week span during the January contact period.

Even though more than a dozen schools are competing for Aguirre’s services, NC State has emerged as one of his leaders going into the spring.

“They’re top three,” Aguirre said of the Wolfpack, who is also in the running with Miami and USF at the moment. “They’re top three, for sure. They communicate well. They build a relationship. They talk to me almost every day.”

In addition to Warren’s near-daily conversations, graduate assistant Nick Treco is also in constant communication with Aguirre. Both are pushing for him to get on campus soon and want Aguirre to set up an official visit in Raleigh.

Aguirre plans to be on campus for a spring practice to learn more about NC State and what the program has to offer before he decides to set up an official visit. And as he goes through the process, Aguirre knows what he wants to find in his future school: a family environment, a school where he feels welcome and a place where he can prepare for life after football.

“I’m really big on the education part,” Aguirre said. “[Warren] told me the education will be good there. … He knows I want to be on ESPN after this. That’s what I’m going to try to do.”

In the meantime, NC State will continue to push for Aguirre. And so far, it seems like Warren has made considerable progress in keeping the Pack at the forefront of Aguirre’s mind.

“I’ve been talking with Coach Warren, he’s a very good dude,” Aguirre said. “I love NC State.”
