Top-30 recruit Matt Able commits to NC State, becomes Will Wade’s first high-profile addition

When Will Wade was hired at NC State, his acumen for high-level recruiting on the high school trail was intriguing to many. Now, it’s on full display. The Pack landed a commitment from Tampa (Fla.) Sagemont Prep four-star shooting guard Matthew Able.
Able, the fourth-best available player as the No. 21 prospect in the 2025 recruiting cycle, took an official visit to NC State last weekend and made his pledge public on Saturday. He had also visited Alabama, Baylor, Stanford and Tennessee and Texas before making a decision.
NC State has seven available scholarships to use for the 2025-26 campaign as Able joins McNeese transfers Alyn Breed and Quadir Copeland as the Pack’s most-recent additions.
The standout recruit was previously committed to Miami, but backed off his decision after Jim Larrañaga’s sudden retirement and Jai Lucas’ subsequent hiring in Coral Gables, Fla. That opened the door for Wade and the Wolfpack to swoop in and garner his commitment.
Able averaged 20.4 points on 40.1 percent shooting from 3-point distance on 7.7 attempts this past season at Sagemont Prep, which allowed him to move into the top 30 in the latest On300 rankings.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard is now the second incoming freshman on NC State’s roster, joining Arden (N.C.) Christ School four-star forward Mikey Wilkins, who was originally committed to Kevin Keatts and has since reaffirmed his decision to Wade.
Able originally picked Miami over the likes of Baylor, Boston College, Michigan, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Xavier. When he committed to the Hurricanes, Able wanted a place he could see the floor early.
“I want to go to a school where I can come right in and compete for my minutes,” Able told On3’s Jamie Shaw. “The dream, the goal for me is to make it to the league. So I want to go to a school that can help me to get there. Academics are big too, because I want to be able to be set up for life when the ball stops bouncing.”
Now, as the Wolfpack continues to build its inaugural roster under Wade, Able will have a prime opportunity to earn immediate minutes in Raleigh.
