NC State's non-conference basketball schedule: what do we know?
NC State women’s basketball received word a significant piece of its non-conference puzzle Monday when the program announced through a Monday afternoon statement it will be traveling to Iowa for a Big Ten/ACC challenge clash with the Hawkeyes. This is the latest addition to a packed non-conference schedule that includes multiple top-10 matchups and a trip out of the country.
The Wolfpack will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, with the goal of extending its winning streak in the inter-conference challenge to four years. Going back to the 2018 season, NC State has defeated Michigan, Maryland and Indiana. In 2021, the sixth-ranked Hoosiers fell 66-58 to the Wolfpack squad that ended up receiving a No. 1 seed in the 2022 NCAA tournament.
Both NC State and Iowa finished last season in the AP top ten, and both programs also took home conference titles. This matchup will truly be the best in the ACC versus the best in the Big Ten. As they prepare to take the court Dec. 1, Iowa and NC State will start a new chapter in a very limited history between the two programs.
“The upcoming matchup between the Wolfpack and the Hawkeyes will mark the teams’ fourth overall meeting,” the statement read. “Overall, Iowa owns the 2-1 advantage in the series record. All three previous games between the squads have been at neutral sites, including a non-conference tournament in Nov. 2002 (69-66 win) and two NCAA Tournament meetings in 1997 (56-50 loss) and 2019 (79-61 loss).”
NC State will have a tall task in slowing down star Iowa guard Caitlin Clark, who led the nation in points and assists last season.
NC State’s final four rematch
Arguably the most intriguing known matchup on the Wolfpack’s schedule is a road trip to UConn. NC State lost in a double overtime, final-four matchup against the Huskies last season that took place in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The two programs will meet again Nov. 20, once again traveling to Connecticut for the clash with the familiar foe.
Booking a trip to Cancun
One of NC State’s longer roadtrips of the season will be for the 2022 Cancun Challenge. Six teams, including the Wolfpack, will travel to a resort in Cancun and compete Nov. 24-26. NC State’s matchups with Connecticut and Iowa, along with this tournament, will all take place in an 12-day stretch. West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Northern Iowa and Central Michigan are also participating in the event.
