After picking up its second Big Ten series win last weekend, Nebraska baseball (19-22, 7-11) travels to Maryland (19-23, 5-13) for another excellent chance to pick up conference wins.

The Terrapins are ranked No. 144 in the RPI, ahead of just two other Big Ten teams. They have yet to win a conference series and dropped two of three to Indiana last weekend. Seven of Maryland’s wins have come in mid-week contests.

With an eight-game home stretch looming, the Huskers can pick up steam with three strong outings in College Park. Nebraska currently sits at No. 13 in the conference standings and will need to finish strong if it hopes to make the Big Ten Tournament. The Huskers control their own destiny, as series against Minnesota and Michigan are on the horizon.

Here’s more on the weekend including an opponent preview, pitching matchups, the biggest storylines and broadcast information:

Know the Foe

***Player to watch: Catcher Alex Calarco

Calarco leads all Maryland hitters with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs, top three in the Big Ten in both categories. The sophomore is coming off a dominant week in which he racked up nine hits and eight RBIs in just four games. He was the first player nationally to reach double-digit home runs. Calarco is one of four Terrapins hitting over .300 and has also drawn 31 walks on the year.

***Maryland has a pair of brothers who have combined for 77 RBIs on the year. Utility Chris Hacopian leads all Terrapin hitters with a .351 batting average, while his older brother Eddie Hacopian ranks top-10 in program history for hits and RBIs. Chris and Eddie each homered in Maryland’s run-rule victory over Towson on Tuesday, the third time both have gone deep in the same game.

***Friday starter Kyle McCoy will pose a significant test for Nebraska. The redshirt sophomore was an All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection in 2023 before missing the entire 2024 season due to injury. This year, McCoy has been one of the Big Ten’s best arms. He ranks in the top 10 among conference pitchers for ERA and strikeouts while throwing more frames than anyone else.

McCoy lasted seven innings in each of his last two starts against Oregon and Indiana. The left-hander had no issues dispatching two of the Big Ten’s best offenses, giving up just five earned runs over the course of both games. He’s tallied five or more strikeouts in seven of his last eight outings.

***Despite its poor conference record, Maryland boasts one of the best offenses in the country. The Terrapins have tallied the second-most runs in the Big Ten and third-most homers. Those numbers are slightly inflated, however, by a 35-run outing against Western Carolina and a 19-run day against Mercyhurst

***Maryland’s knack for drawing walks has contributed to a .415 team on-base percentage. Infielder Brayden Martin has contributed 42 walks of his own, the most among any player in the conference. Six Terrapins have earned 20 or more free bags this season.

***Joey McMannis began the season as Maryland’s Saturday starter but moved into a relief role after a disastrous one-inning, eight-run outing against UCLA. He returned to the starting rotation in mid-April before making his first Saturday start in over a month against Indiana. McMannis tossed a season-high five innings against the Hoosiers, holding the Big Ten’s top offense to two runs on three hits.

***Maryland’s Sunday struggles have spoiled multiple promising weekends. The Terrapins have given up 98 runs on Sundays and are 2-8 in series finales. Nebraska is 5-4 in comparison.
