Florida Edge transfer Chief Borders commits to Nebraska
Nebraska picked up its third transfer from Florida this off-season. Former four-star edge Chief Borders committed to the Huskers on Tuesday. Borders is ranked as the No. 40 edge transfer in the portal, and Borders will join safety Corey Collier and long-snapper Marco Ortiz in Lincoln, who are also from Florida.
The 6-foot-5, 242-pound edge is from Chicago, Illinois, and has three years of eligibility remaining. Borders played in four games during his true freshman year in 2021, then redshirted.
“I always had a connection with Nebraska,” Borders said. “They recruited me before, and I was able to get an understanding then of what Nebraska is about and their culture. And with the new staff under Matt Rhule all fell in line. It all came together.”
Borders feels a connection to Nebraska because he is from The Windy City. He says that it was good coming back closer to home and he still feels connected to that part of the country.
“The visit was awesome,” Borders said. “It was great getting back into the Midwest and the Big Ten. It has a home-field feel for me. I am from Chicago, born and raised.”
The Nebraska staff see Borders playing the hybrid Edge spot for them. It’s a complicated role that requires a versatile athlete like Borders to play.
“They see me in the hybrid spot, definitely. They like me as a defender that can rush the quarterback and I will also be able to drop off into coverage.”
Chief Borders had strong connection to Nebraska staff
There was a need for Borders to feel connected to the Nebraska staff very quickly. Defensive coordinator Tony White and Borders are on the same sheet of music following the visit.
“Coach White knows my goals and knows what I want to achieve,” Borders said. “Being on the same page as him and getting that relationship going with him puts a cherry on top.”
For a number of recruits, there was a tie back to being recruited by them previously out of high school. That is not the case for Borders, but he did meet the new head, Matt Rhule, once before.
“No sir, I never met any of these coaches being recruited out of high school. I met Matt Rhule one time. He came to talk to us at practice at Florida.”

Borders says that the pieces are coming back into place for Nebraska following his visit this past weekend.
“I really feel like Nebraska is going to bring back the Nebraska culture that we saw in the 90s back when the Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl were happening.
“Nebraska is going to put an emphasis on the Blackshirts from a defensive standpoint and bring the juice that Nebraska deserves.”
“The new facility was beautiful,” Borders said. “Coming from Florida and seeing the new facility I feel like Nebraska is really handling their business when it comes to the facility.”
Dec. 16 visit weekend continues to deliver for Huskers
Borders took an official visit to Nebraska on the weekend of Dec. 16. It was the only official he took before the early signing day.
In 2022, Borders played in all 12 of Florida’s games, mostly on special teams. He recorded his first career tackle against Georgia at the end of October.
Borders went to Heard County High School in Franklin, Georgia where he played football and threw the shot put and discus. As a senior, he recorded 54 tackles, five tackles for loss and one sack.
