Former Husker walk-on Jake Peetz will not be part of Matt Rhule's coaching staff
Jake Peetz was once thought to be a lock to join Matt Rhule’s coaching staff at Nebraska. That is no longer the case, multiple sources told HuskerOnline.
Peetz, an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Rams, will remain in that role after considering a position at Nebraska, according to sources.
Peetz likely would’ve served as quarterbacks coach. On Friday, Rhule announced two new members of his coaching staff but still has three spots left to fill. On Nov. 30, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Peetz was expected to join Rhule’s staff at NU.
However, earlier this week the LA Rams lost offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who accepted the same position at Kentucky. It’s unknown if this changed anything with Peetz and Nebraska.
Rhule’s connection to Peetz stems from their one season with the Carolina Panthers in 2020.
A native of O’Neill who lettered as a walk-on long-snapper at Nebraska in 2005, Peetz in 2021 served as LSU’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Jake Peetz has learned from some of the best
The 38-year-old Peetz’s extensive coaching background includes two stints as an offensive analyst at Alabama, the first time in 2013 and the second go-round in 2018.

Legendary Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban had a profound impact on Peetz.
“He told me if you want to be great in this profession, you need to learn and understand defense at a very high level if you want to be good on offense,” Peetz said in a January of 2021 interview.
A graduate of St Mary’s High School in O’Neill, Peetz worked a total of eight seasons as an assistant in the NFL and five in the NCAA, most of which were spent as a quarterbacks coach.
Peetz was hired by Oakland in 2015 as an offensive assistant following NFL stops at Washington (2014) and Jacksonville (2008-12) and collegiate stops at Alabama (2013), UCLA (2007) and Santa Barbara (California) City College (2006).
It appeared he would be heading back to the college ranks, in Lincoln. It isn’t happening, though. So, NU now must fill presumably two spots on its offensive coaching staff, and one the defensive staff. The Huskers announced defensive coordinator Tony White and offensive line coach Donovan Raiola as staff members Friday.
