Nebraska baseball (20-23, 8-12) took care of Maryland (20-24, 6-2) on Saturday, 7-2, to even the series at one game apiece. The Huskers lead from start to finish thanks to an 11-hit day at the plate.

Ty Horn (7.15 ERA) posted his best outing of the season, tossing six scoreless frames and striking out five. He stranded eight Terrapins and made multiple impressive defensive plays.

Case Sanderson led the way offensively with three hits, three RBIs and a home run. Cayden Brumbaugh added two RBIs on three hits of his own, while seven different Huskers tallied a base knock on Saturday.

Free bags set up Husker bats

Maryland starter Joey McMannis gave Nebraska six free bags in the first four innings.

In the top of the second, walks from Sanderson and Joshua Overbeek put two on base for Hogan Helligso with two outs. The Huskers’ nine-hole hitter capitalized with an RBI single to center. Nebraska took a 1-0 lead and never looked back.

In the fourth, Dylan Carey battled for a full-count leadoff walk before Sanderson brought him home with an RBI double. Three straight outs stranded Sanderson, the Huskers’ fourth runner left on base.

Nebraska didn’t need any free passes in the fifth, though.

Bolin, Brumbaugh and Max Buettenback hit three straight doubles to open the frame, plating two more Husker runs. Two outs followed but Sanderson brought home another with an RBI single to right, boosting the lead to 5-0.

The Huskers hit .407 in advancement opportunities and .400 with two outs on Saturday. Their leadoff hitters went 5-for-10 at the plate.

Horn escapes early threats

Horn gave up six hits and two walks on Saturday, but the right-hander made multiple clutch throws during six scoreless frames. He stranded eight Terrapins on base while striking out five.

Horn found himself in a jam in the third. After giving up a single, an errant throw on a pickoff attempt put Brayden Martin on third with one out. Two consecutive walks loaded the bases, but Horn escaped the inning without giving up a run. The Terrapins began the game 0-for-7 with runners on base and stranded five through three frames.

In the bottom of the fourth, Robby Bolin robbed a home run to keep Horn’s scoreless outing alive, stretching his glove over the center-field wall.

Horn allowed more hits in his final two innings but Maryland never threatened him again. Two sixth-inning strikeouts boosted his total to five on the day.

Insurance runs preserve cushion

Once Horn’s day came to an end, Maryland began to rally.

In the seventh, Drew Christo walked two consecutive hitters and hit another with a pitch to load the bases. Maryland plated its first run of the game on an RBI groundout, but Christo escaped the jam with a full-count strikeout.

Casey Daiss took over in the eighth and immediately gave up a solo home run. That was as close as Maryland would get, though, as Brumbaugh and Sanderson added to their impressive days with insurance runs in the final two innings.
