Nebraska baseball (11-14, 2-7) gained much-needed momentum with a 7-3 Friday night win over No. 5 Oregon State (19-5) in front of 6,348 fans at Haymarket Park.

In the top of the second inning, the Beavers threatened early with runners on second and third and no outs. But left-hander Will Walsh, who delivered an outstanding performance, retired three straight hitters. He induced back-to-back popups to first baseman Case Sanderson, then got a routine groundout to second baseman Cayden Brumbaugh.

Walsh followed with a 1-2-3 third inning, setting the stage for Nebraska’s offense to ignite.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, Tyler Stone stepped up to the plate with Devin Nunez on second after a single earlier in the inning. Stone launched a no-doubt, two-run homer over the right-field wall, sending Haymarket Park into a frenzy. On the very next pitch, Dylan Carey blasted a fastball out of the park for back-to-back home runs and a 4-0 Nebraska lead.

The Huskers never looked back. In the fifth inning, Cael Frost added to the fireworks with his fifth home run of the year — a two-run shot over the left-field wall. It marked the first true offensive explosion of the season for Nebraska.

The Huskers finished with 11 hits, including three home runs and a double. Nine different players recorded hits, with multi-hit efforts from Nunez and Carey.

Walsh, Christo shine on the mound

Walsh earned a standing ovation as he walked off the mound in the seventh after going six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Once again, the reliable lefty filled up the strike zone, letting his defense do the work behind him.

After Walsh issued back-to-back walks to open the seventh, pitching coach Rob Childress turned to veteran right-hander Drew Christo. Christo responded with three straight groundouts, allowing just one run. Shortstop Dylan Carey made a highlight-reel play to throw out a runner originally ruled safe.

What’s next

The Huskers have a chance to seize real momentum for the first time this season with two more games against a top-tier Oregon State squad.

First pitch Saturday is set for 2 p.m. CT, with Ty Horn taking the mound. Sunday’s game will begin at noon CT, with Jackson Brockett getting the start. Both games will be streamed on BTN Plus.
