Nebraska delivered a knockout punch in the seventh inning and never looked back, securing a wild 16-7 win over No. 5 Oregon State on Sunday at Haymarket Park.

The Huskers (12-15, 2-7 Big Ten) trailed the Beavers (19-5) 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and nobody on base. Case Sanderson drew a walk, then Cayden Brumbaugh and Dylan Carey were hit by pitches to load the bases for Tyler Stone.

Stone, who homered earlier in the game, fell behind 0-2 in the count before lining a two-out, two-RBI single to center field to give Nebraska an 8-7 lead. Moments later, pinch hitter Max Buttenback launched a three-run homer to right, stretching the lead to 11-7.

The Huskers would tack on four more runs in the inning — all with two outs — capping off a nine-run frame that featured five hits and one Oregon State error. The game was called after eight innings due to a predetermined travel curfew for Oregon State, with a stop time of 4:15 p.m.

Nebraska also put together a four-run fourth inning. Carey walked to lead off, and after a single by Stone, Will Jesske crushed a three-run homer over the left-field wall. Later in the inning, Riley Silva singled and stole second. Joshua Overbeek reached on an infield single, and Silva scored on a throwing error to make it 4-2.

The Husker pitching staff came through in key moments, minimizing damage throughout. In the fourth inning, Oregon State had already plated two runs and loaded the bases, but reliever Casey Daiss induced a groundout to end the threat.

In the seventh, the Beavers took a 7-6 lead with three runs already home and the bases loaded. Nebraska closer Luke Broderick struck out Oregon State’s No. 3 hitter, Trent Caraway, to end the inning and keep the deficit at one.

Offensively, it was Nebraska’s most complete performance of the season. The Huskers finished with 14 hits, went 8-for-9 with runners in scoring position, and got their leadoff batter aboard in five of eight innings. Nebraska drove in 10 runs with two outs and left just two runners on base, compared to 10 for Oregon State.

Stone and Silva each recorded three hits. Home runs came from Stone, Buttenback, Jesske and Chase Helligso.

Nebraska hopes the win marks a turning point as the calendar flips to April. The Huskers have midweek games against Creighton and UNO before hosting Rutgers for a Big Ten series next weekend.
