Huskers unveil new throwback uniforms honoring 1983 'Scoring Explosion' team
Nebraska officially announced its newest alternate uniforms for the 2022 season on Monday, as the Huskers will pay tribute with throwbacks from the famed 1983 “Scoring Explosion” team.
Still considered by many as one of the most prolific offenses in college football history, Nebraska’s 1983 squad lit up opposing defenses to the tune of 654 points.
Led by Heisman Trophy-winning running back Mike Rozier, All-American quarterback Turner Gill, and eventual No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick receiver Irving Fryar, the Huskers averaged 52 points and more than 400 rushing yards per game.
That season also included a record-setting drubbing of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where NU scored a whopping 84 points and played every member of its 60-man travel roster in an 84-13 victory.

Nebraska’s only defeat that season came in the national championship against Miami at the Orange Bowl. Head coach Tom Osborne opted to go for the win with a two-point conversion in the final minute rather than a tie with an extra point.
Gill’s two-point pass fell incomplete, but the ’83 Huskers are still remembered as one of the greatest squads in program history.
