Nebraska’s first transfer portal addition of the 2025 cycle is officially in the books, as Iowa transfer Pryce Sandfort announced his commitment to the Huskers on Friday.

The 6-foot-7 wing took his first portal visit to Lincoln last week and also visited Illinois this past weekend. Ohio State had also been in the mix, as was a potential return to the Hawkeyes.

“Nebraska was one of my first calls,” Sandfort said. “Fred (Hoiberg) called me pretty much right away, and I knew it was going to be a place I wanted to look at again just from my previous relationships. Obviously, I’m really close with Fred. I grew up going to his camps (at Iowa State), so there was a really tight relationship there.

“I got to campus and absolutely loved all the guys and the coaches and Lincoln. It was a really tough decision. Really, really tough. But every time I started thinking about where I wanted to go, my heart was kind of always in Lincoln.”

A junior-to-be, Sandfort appeared in all 33 games with two starts for Iowa this season as a sophomore. He averaged 8.8 points on 48.8% shooting with 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while hitting 40% from 3-point range. That included scoring in double figures over Iowa’s final four games.

It just so happened that two of Sandfort’s best performances of the year came in wins over Nebraska. He averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while hitting 7-of-15 (46.7%) from behind the arc vs. the Huskers.

Sandfort said Hoiberg’s history of NBA development and five-out system were significant draws for him beyond his personal connections to NU.

“Obviously, he was an NBA wing, so he knows how to get wings to that level,” Sandfort said. “Their system is really free-flowing and pretty wing-dominated. I watched a lot of Nebraska and Big Ten basketball, and just their system, it benefits the wings and the freedom I’ll have was really intriguing. I’m excited.”

Sandfort had long been on Nebraska’s radar

Nebraska was heavily involved with Sandfort during his recruiting process out of high school. The former four-star recruit officially visited NU before his senior season at Waukee (Iowa) Northwest in 2023.

Sandfort’s father is a native Nebraskan (Holdredge) and played college basketball at Hastings College, Their family has also attended numerous Husker football games over the years. So, it was little surprise that his family gave their full support behind Sandfort choosing the Huskers.

“They’re really excited,” Sandfort said. “It’s pretty special for us. I grew up a huge Nebraska football fan, so my family was really excited to be able to come to Lincoln a lot more.”

Most Nebraska fans have already gotten a good look at what to expect from Sandfort as a Husker. Above all else, though, he prides himself on a winning mentality.

“You’re getting a guy who just really, really wants to win, who puts winning above anything else,” Sandfort said. “I’m going to give it 100 percent every game.”
