Nebraska basketball received some big news earlier this week when it was learned that former Florida graduate transfer and 2020-21 SEC Preseason Player of the Year Keyontae Johnson would be in Lincoln for an official visit.
Johnson wrapped up his trip on Friday, but according to sources close to the situation, the 6-foot-6 wing will not be a Husker when he announces his commitment sometime next week.
While there was legitimate mutual interest in Johnson joining head coach Fred Hoiberg’s program, the timing of his recruitment to NU played a factor in the two sides going in different directions.
The issue was with Johnson’s heart condition, which ended his Florida career on Dec. 12, 2020, when he collapsed during a game against Florida State.
Given that Nebraska only recently got involved in pursuing Johnson, there wasn’t enough time for the Husker staff and medical team to thoroughly evaluate his condition and the potential consequences of continuing his basketball career.

There had been talk that Johnson might try to take one final visit to Memphis before making his decision, but Nebraska On3 learned that trip had been canceled.
Those in the know think Kansas State, which hosted him on an official visit in July, has emerged as the favorite to land Johnson. The Huskers will face the Wildcats on Dec. 17 in Kansas City, Missouri, at T-Mobile Arena.
In his last full season in 2019-20, Johnson averaged 14.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game.
