Everyone loves a signing day surprise. The top-ranked player in the state of Nebraska delivered one on Wednesday. Lincoln East wide receiver Malachi Coleman announced his intentions to sign with the Huskers.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound Coleman originally committed to the Huskers on Oct. 22. He reopened his recruiting process on Dec. 1 after NU’s previous coaching staff was not retained.

Over that time, Coleman talked with schools like Michigan, Louisville and Syracuse. He took official visits to both NU and Colorado.

His final decision on signing day was between the Huskers and the Buffs. CU is led by first-year head coach Deion Sanders and Nebraska first-year head coach Matt Rhule.

In the end, it was the relationship Coleman and his family established with Rhule and the new Husker staff that won out. Coleman had an in-home visit with Rhule on Dec. 2 and another unofficial visit to campus on Dec. 4. On Dec. 9, Coleman and his family had their official visit weekend to Nebraska.

Malachi Coleman becomes the Huskers’ eighth in-state recruit

The in-state class of 2023 will be a year to remember for a long time in the state of Nebraska.

By adding Coleman, the Big Red now has eight in-state recruits in its 2023 signing class.

That is the all-time highest number in program history.

Coleman joins Omaha Westside kicker Tristan Alvano, Lincoln Southeast offensive lineman Gunnar Gottula, Omaha Westside wide receiver Jaylen Lloyd, Elkhorn South edge Maverick Noonan, Omaha Creighton Prep offensive lineman Sam Sledge, Scottsbluff offensive lineman Brock Knutson and Gretna offensive lineman Mason Goldman as 2023 in-state signees.

NU also made three other known offers in the state to Lincoln High athlete Beni Ngoyi (Iowa State signee), Pierce tight end Ben Brahmer (Iowa State signee) and Fremont Bergan linebacker Kade McIntyre (Oklahoma signee).

It’s also believed that Rhule’s staff engaged in conversation with Gretna quarterback Zane Flores (Oklahoma State signee). Iowa also signed Norfolk Catholic offensive lineman Kade Pieper, who was not recruited by the Huskers.

The 13 Power Five signees in Nebraska are believed to be the biggest number the state has produced in the modern 85-scholarship era, which started in 1993.
